forever in blue jeans rag quilt

Am thinking of making this one. How many pair of jeans does this take? Could I get the same effect using flannel instead of jeans?

You have not had any replies so I will give it a stab. It would depend on how big a quilt you want to make and whether you are using men's extra large or kids jeans as to how many you would need. Flannel is great for rags quilts from what I understand, I have yet to make one but it is on my list. I want to do one that is jeans on one side and flannel on the other. It will be heavy.

As Claire said, it depends on the size of the blue jeans and the size of the quilt. I made a lap quilt that was about 40 x40 inches and used 3 pair of jeans.

I want to make a quilt for a double bed. Saw photo of this on--where else, Pinterest. The pattern is in the fons &porter spring 2014 mag but I havent ventured out to buy it yet. Am afraid to step foot in a fabric store right now. I have resolved not to buy fabric for awhile!

Flannel makes wonderful rag quilts. Very soft and warm. I use 3 layers of flannel to achieve maximum fluffiness. The top, the back, and in the middle instead of batting. I think for a full bed I would start off with 8-9 inch squares.

You don't need to buy the pattern! It's been free for a very long time on the internet.

My first sewing project, other than mending, was a "track blanket" for my granddaughter. It is jean/flannel with batting. And, brother it's heavy and warm for those Spring track meets. Will attempt to attach a picture. As to how many jean pairs - a bunch of all sizes.

Yes. I get my jeans at a yard sale if that helps any. Flannel is easier to cut an sew.
