I decided to make a traditional Log Cabin quilt ...started out with the 2-1/2" red chimney and then..........because I had 2-1/2" in my mind, I proceeded to cut 2-1/2" strips....lots of them!! Took the pattern to work to drool over at lunchtime and that's when I noticed the strips were to be 1-1/2" wide! So back to the cutting mat! Threw all the 1" left overs in a bag.....so mad at myself throughout all the re-cutting! NOW.....what could I do with the 1" strips if anything at all? I Googled for 1" strips and nothing comes up for ideas.

Re: Ideas for 1" strips
Stitch them together "jelly roll quilt style"... making into a fabulous piece of fabric... make a tote or makeup zip bag... even a pillow .. if you do embroidery, Machine or hand... or cross stitch.. make something like a phrase or picture.. square off and sash with your nice new fabric..I don't worry about seams or crossing.. just treat the whole piece as FABRIC..."Each day well-lived and Happy;
that's all there is to Life!"

Thank you for your ideas.......I was concerned about after sewing two together ...all that would be left to show is only 1/2".......lots of sewing ...but could turn out to be a great new piece! I suppose it is no different than those who make things with the selvedge edges, huh?

jomama1951...oh, sweetie! There's lots you can do with 1" strips and they can be used in many ways. When it comes to fabric (even if it's a scrap) you keep it for the future projects! And yes, even selvedge edges have been used in string quilt blocks. This is a project I made for my neighbor...if it's scrappy, I personally love it!

how abouta three dudes block.....fence and rail....just because a pattern says a certain size doesn't mean you have to stay that size.... i personally would have went ahead and used the original ones you cut, then it makes it yours and it is not wrong, just different.:icon_wave::icon_woohoo:Kellie:icon_hi:

Another good use for 1 inch strips is accent flange. Does a nice frame look to blocks or fussy cuts.Vonnie

Re: Ideas for 1" strips
If you ever have that problem again, just make the log cabin with 2 1/2 inch strips. I made one like that from flannel and it made a large quilt quickly. I think I used a 3 inch center square. Sounds like you did great with it. You could make a small log cabin quilt with your leftovers. Or maybe some doll quilts.
