I will be able to look at a quilt, and SEE the blocks and how they are constructed at first glance.

I sit staring at the screen tilting my head from side to side like Nipper the RCA pup listening to his master's voice.

Look for the repeat. When you see a pattern start to repeat itself, it's a good chance that you have found the block. Or you are close.

I can relate. Last year, I signed up to take a class, and the quilt was gorgeous with lots of little pieces. I was up half the night trying to figure out the blocks. I asked my General Contractor husband. He glanced over looked at it and said they are right here. He was right and I was irritated that he could see it so quickly! He took a pencil and drew a line around the blocks. A light bulb came on, now if I'm having trouble I make a copy of the picture and put it in a 8 1/2 X 11 protective sleeve and use a marker to mark where it is. When I find it, I use a permanent marker and put it in a binder and then I can always refer to it if I'm struggling.

LOL! I love your reference to the RCA pup.(Still laughing) When I'm looking at quilts I see if I can find the 1/2 sq. triangles, because, if they are in the pattern, it gives me a reference point to find the rest of the block.
