Which color thread should I use?

I'm VERY new to quilting, but very old....well, at least to sewing! I'm going to piece a really bright quilt and it has all different colors in it. There is no one color that is in EVERY piece of fabric. I think there is white in MOST pieces. My primary colors are orange and pink (BRIGHT, needs sunglasses type). If I can figure out how to insert an image, I'll show you what I did on Photoshop (I don't have anything fancy like the E quilter program---YET!) so you can see the general colors. With sewing clothes, it's easy. You match the one fabric you're using. I just don't know with quilting when you piece how you choose your thread color. HELP! Thank you!
    Blessings,
    Lori

    Welcome Chef Mama,
I don't think it matters much which color you use for piecing, because it generally isn't seen. I have been using white because I have fallen for the Gutermann's 100% cotton thread and the white comes in the bigger spools. I know neutrals and grays are a popular color to piece with too, but they have been out in the big spools when I have looked.
I hope this helps at least a little bit.
I love those fabrics and colors! I used to be mostly a pastel person, but have been pulled towards the brighter colors more and more.

I use a lot of medium to light gray. It tends to blend with everything and never shows. For the quilting, I would chose the hot pink or the orange, whichever you like the most. Bright and cheery fabric......fun! SuzyQue

Thanks ladies! That is REALLY helpful info. I never would have thought of grey! I have some of the Guttermann white! yea!

I have WANTED to quilt for years. I never realized how different it is from sewing clothes or using store bought patterns. Cutting shapes is really freeing when you're used to curves and darts and such.

        I'll let y'all know how I do!

Try some of the varigated color thread. Hard to tell until you put some thread up against the quilt.

Love, love, love your colors! I think any thread that isn't too dark will work just fine.

I'd use white too and then I'd match the quilting thread with your backing.

Re: Which color thread should I use?

I bought a HUGE spool of Gutermann's thread in an ivory colour (I read 3000m as 300m) and I've been using that for all my piecing. I'm coming to the end of it now and I'm shopping around for another one because it's done a really good job.

I'm with the other ladies, your piecing thread doesn't really show so you can go with pretty much anything. When you're quilting it will show up so you might want to try different threads to see which one you like the best. For my last quilt I sewed all my scraps together and layered it up with some leftover batting. Then I sewed lines across it in different colours to see which I liked the best. Sometimes it surprises you!

(PS love your "quilt" in photoshop. I do the same, sometimes I spend hours messing around in there before I start cutting)

Thank you so much everyone! I'm actually piecing it now when I can. I have kidney stones that have been making life rather, ahem, fun, for awhile & have "surgery" Monday to get rid of them. I decided after my trip to the ER on Thursday & a good dose of meds that I probably shouldn't operate a sewing machine OR rotary cutter that day! LOL!

Once I get it all pieced, then I'll be over in the quilting section asking, "Now HOW does this machine quilting really work?" LOL!

I have been using a rasant thread colour 0663, which is an odd shade of greyie green, but amazingly enough it seems to blend with everything. Did a 9-way swap so had lots of colours to sew and it suited everyone of them.

                        cheers
