Preview of my first freezer paper applique

This is my first time doing a freezer paper turned edge applique. If I had known what I was doing I would have picked an easier pattern to learn on. Nevertheless, I am enjoying the process and have made lots of improvements in the first 7 blocks of this pattern. It will take many weeks to finish. If you want to see more pictures of the work in process, including close ups of the individual birds I have made a separate album called Winters Song posted here

Wow, nice job! Looks tedious. Did you hand stitch each piece?

These pieces are machine appliqued. My sewing machine, a Brother PC420 has a quilting applique blanket stitch. It is stitch #61. The default setting is width 1.5, length 1.2. What I like about this stitch is that it takes three very small straight stitches, and then one very small side wise bite stitch. I can make very tight curves and do very small pieces. It holds the pieces firmly together, but is still soft and flexible.

I made a sample piece and tried four different stitches on my sewing machine until I found a stitch that I liked. It is probably not any faster than hand stitching, but I am happier doing it on my machine than by hand.

Wow! That is beautiful and you certainly jumped right into the deep end of the pool on that one.

Toni ... If I keep sewing long enough, will they make their own dinner?

Here is a very short 3 minute long video showing the freezer paper applique process. I used Best Press instead of starch because that is what I had. best Press works fine.

I used the glass extension table that fits around my sewing machine as a light box by putting a light underneath it. I used it to trace my shapes, and used it to align my pieces as I assembled them. I cautiously ironed the glue baste which temporarily holds the pieces in place right on top of the glass extension table. I had my iron on medium (wool) setting not high (cotton) and only had the iron in place for seconds. It worked with no damage to the table. Easy peasy
