    Modified 9 patch quilt

The other day I was at the antique store. I come across some old hand stitched 9 patches and gladly purchased them for a measly 12 bucks. When I went to put them together, because their accuracy was off by almost an inch I had to figure out a way to save them. I decided to use the disappearing 9 patch block to make them all the same size. So I came out about an inch from the inner seams and trimmed them and then sewed them back together. They resemble bats, and this idea would make a good halloween quilt. Alot of this fabric was bark cloth and was very thick, so thick in fact while quilting over those areas, the cloth actually pulled the needle out of my machine. FMQ'd, but nothing special in that regard. I was going for the cheddar quilt look, I am not sure that I captured that. The thing I learned most from this one is that when they are handstitched, and you cut down the blocks to make the 9 patch disappear, they can completely come unsewn since you have trimmed off the knotted edges.
Blogging ahead.....research in quilting and sewing with a dab of cooking/recipes too.

What a cool quilt! It's wonderful that you saved those blocks! Are you keeping it for yourself or gifting it?

You took a chance slicing them up, but it really paid off. That's a super nice quilt. Barkcloth....that's a memory from my childhood. We had drapes and other d├ęcor items made from that fabric. In its time it was very stylish.

You took a simple block and improved it. This makes it look very complicated. I like it!
