Finished my first two rag quilts over the long weekend!

As much as I am tired of the cold and snow, having the day off yesterday was still nice. I managed to finish two almost identical rag quilts for my nephews. Technically, they are my "grandnephews" since they are the sons of my niece, but that makes me feel a little too old.

Love the Sasparilla fabric - I originally bought two charm packs thinking they would each make a big enough quilt - newbie mistake! I decided to go with the layer cake to get a little closer to twin size, since they are 4 and almost 5 years old. I'm hoping they will be well loved for a few years. The front is the same - decided not to drive myself crazy trying to switch around the pattern.

The backs have different colored yardage - which I had to cut myself and was a little freaked out about - but - it worked out. Decided to try and make things a little interesting by adding a second color to the "name row" and I used some iron on fabric letters for their names. Sorry these pics are a little blurry, me & my phone camera haven't been getting along lately.

Now I have two Sasparilla charm packs that I am going to make and donate to the NICU and Bereavement quilt groups on this site! Looking forward to getting started on them this weekend. Thanks for looking!

I really like that you put their names on the back - I'm going to borrow that idea.

Thank you ladies - for all your kind words!

I definitely like how quickly they went together with the layer cake, but it does seem a little sparse with the "rag" part - which is what I love the most about the look. It probably would have looked better if I had followed my original plan to use charm packs, but I think next time I'll still do a layer cake but allow myself a bigger seam allowance to "rag" up.

mjjames -Great! I was inspired by the ladies here and a few threads on the importance of making quilt labels. I realized after I completed the quilts for my nieces that I didn't include one on them so I wanted to try and fix that this time. It's a little hard to see from the picture but I did write "For" and "Love Aunt Vicki - 2014" around the hearts. I hope those fabric markers hold up for a few washings. LOL
