    Look at my new "assistant"

My husband surprised me last week by telling me to find a sewing machine that would let me free motion quilt and he would pick up the tab! After exhaustive research I was pretty much set on the Janome 1600P. When I got to the sewing center I tried several just to be sure I had chosen the one that would help me free moton quilt. I was quite surprised to find out I much preferred the Juki (which is very limited-only straight stitch but has some other great operating features) to the Janome. Needless to say, I am now the proud owner of a Juki TL2010Q. I am by no means an expert in FMQ'ing yet, but what an improvement the right machine makes! I am not expecting to win any awards but I am so happy to know I can now quilt some of my work on my own. Yay!!!

I tried to add a picture-not sure if I did it right.

I tried out this machine at a quilt expo and was very impressed by the wonderful FMQ work it was capable of! Congratulations on your new acquisition!

Enjoy... what is it about this that you liked better than the 1600... just wondering... I have that one and am now using it for piecing... just love the speed and strength of it..I've heard a lot about Juki and may someday get the Virtuoso Q.. or something like that,, I jumped to the Bailey on my quilt frame and honestly,, I enjoyed the Janome better,, I thought I needed more throat space and am finding it wasn't that big a deal... I love the high speed better than the extra 7" of TS... live and learn,, but it's a great machine.. I just like to go a little faster and my stitch length is not where I'd like it... Have fun,, you are right, your FMQ will get better and better with this beauty...good luck.. B

Congratulations on your new machine! That is so exciting and so nice of your husband.

Since I am new to quilting I am not well studied on sewing machines for quilting. I heard from videos that we can use a simple machine at home to free motion quilt. I am sure though that the better machines do a better job but I am unsure what the machine you got can do and do better than a halfway decent sewing machine...nothing fancy but decent. Someday, I would love to get a really great machine but boy they are expensive. I assume that the straight stitch machine is used solely for straight stitching and quilting and you use your other machine for other types of sewing that requires other stitches and the fact that it is only a straight stitch keeps the cost down and the focus goes into the other features for quilting. ?? Will I run into problems free motion quilting on my basic machine? It is a Euro Pro...nothing fancy but has been a good enough machine for sewing. I have a friend that has a Singer Quantum stylist 9960. She says it is a great machine and she free motion quilts. She is new at it though. I can allow myself to spend the amount for the Singer 9960 and hope that it would do the job. I also hope that the one I have will be good enough for now until I can fork out for another one,.

GrammaBabs....that Juki she got does 1500spm.....and all it does is a straight stitch period.

Holly, where in Washington are you? Sew Expo is starting the 27th of this month at the Puyallup Fairgrounds and I would urge you to try to get down there one of the days it's there. You can try out any machine imaginable, from sewing to longarm and in between. Not to mention all the fabric, patterns and other goodies they have there!!

Hi! Well, I am way on the east side. We have been here ten years and we have not been to the west side yet. We did visit that side in the 90's when we lived in San Diego. We do not get around much. When you have horses and pets, it is hard to leave. The dogs mainly are what hold us back. They have never been left. I would love to go though! However, it would be hard to go and not be able to afford anything. I could go there with a friend though and my husband and girls can watch the pets. However, this month would be too soon for me. Thank you for letting me know though! Maybe I can catch the next one.

Congrats on your new machine! We had a lot of Juki's at work and they're workhorses.

Congrats on your new machine! I got the same machine about 3 months ago and I'm really liking how it sews. My needle threader doesn't always work like it should so I'm going to call my dealer about that tomorrow.

You will love that Juki! I was sure that when I got mine I didn't need the advertised 3 hour class ... but I was there for 3 hours! Took less than an hour to learn the settings and where the oil ports were and I spent 2 hrs + just playing. I brought pre-made blocks with different loft battings and just enjoyed myself. No fancy stitches but a dream for FMQ. Your husband is a great guy!
