    Re: Polka Dots and Spots...

    Now I have another question.
If I would want to use charm packs and layer cakes in this pattern, so the quilt would look like the quilt in Natalie's tutorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Dh0x...e=more_related, wouldn't the layer cake squares need to be trimmed down to 9 1/2 inches square?
My thinking could be very off, but this is how I 'see' it.
4 charm pack squares set in 2 rows of 2 blocks---5 inches each, minus 1/2 inch each direction when sewn would make a 9 1/2 inch block.
I hope this question makes sense and thanks for any and all advice you can give me!

so each 5" charm would become a 4 3/4" square after you make your 4 square blocks. Then your big squares would have to be the same size as those 4 squares....

so yes...I'm getting the same numbers you are...they would have to be trimmed a 1/2" on each side.

You could always put a 4 square together first and get the measurement then you would know for sure how big your large squares needed to be.

You can do the same pattern with just layer cakes. You just cut a 6 inch circle out of the middle and make the same quilt only bigger. That's what I'm doing. I'm using the woodland layer cakes and Snowflakes from Basic Grey by Moda as the background. It's going to be really pretty. I don't have to cut anything down, It's just all 10" blocks.

Someplace I have a link to a 6 minute circle block. I used it to make the moons for my Halloween bat blocks. They were great and easy!!! I'll dig it up and get back here with it. They took closer to 10 minutes, but that could just be me!
The quilt is fantastic! It is a perfect showcase for the fun charm packs I have collected! Add that to the list for 2011... or 2012!

          Thanks for the inspiration Michelle!

This link is for 6" circles. I made mine bigger for a 12" block, so it will work for any size as long as you have the right seam allowances. The glue washes out. It took a lot of the "scary" out of circles for me! It also gives a finished edge instead of raw edge applique.
