it's what i do when i'm not here sewing with you GOD Bless America
I read this and said, "Oh, somebody had the same experience as me". Then I realized that somebody WAS me! Didn't get it until I saw the quilt pictures! Duh!
Beautiful Quilts - when you made the one with the two jelly rolls id you just use one roll and then the other , or did you go from th outside in and the inside out...(I'm making myself crazy) I have two flannel tiki jelly rolls of 20 fabrics, 2 colors each for a total of 40 strips 4 of each color - they are hand dyed though so there is variation in the strips- thanks in advance

I always mix them up, I never do the same strips next to each other. It ends up so random, that sometimes the same strips are touching each other when it is sewn out, but I start off with a random selection of jelly roll strips. I know Jenny said to take them off the roll as they come, but with the jelly roll she made hers out of, it turned out really blobby, I thought. (I didn't care for the jelly roll choice) Hers only had several different colors of strips, and the pattern was all the same. i think the JRR tops turn out much cuter with more variance in the colors of the strips. I usually sort my jelly roll strips according to matching fabrics, then lay the piles out on the table, and pick up a different one each time I sew another strip on to the long starting strip. I did all the ones pictured the way I just described it to you.
Jean, you are the best. Love that you share your love of the jelly roll. I am still to get up the nerve to do one!
Just cut some coordinated strips out of scrap yardage and give it a try. I love surprises, that's why I love this style of quilt, you never quite know how it is going to turn out!
Jean, HELP! I just finished quilting the top of my JRR. Should I just trim the edges straight?
Sides? Yes! Ends? Should be straight already, if you trim them a lot, it will be obvious that the quilt wasn't square because the strip will be narrower on one end than the other.
Let me be clear, the sides need to be trimmed of the batting and backing, I also need to trim the same away from the ends. I am not quite sure how to go about getting a nice clean, straight edge on the sides. Thank you!
I use my 24" ruler and my rotary cutter. I have two 24" mats that I butt together on my cutting table and cut the edges with those tools. You can mark the cutting line with chalk or a marking pen to guide your cuts, or eyeball it if you have a place to lay it out and feel confident about doing it that way. If your side edges are wavy, you'll have to straighten the edges based on the narrowest part of the quilt. You can cut it with scissors if you don't think you can use the rotary cutter and mat effectively. I also have a 48" aluminum ruler that I use sometimes on my edges because it is a longer straight edge. I alo have an old t square that I use to help me square up the sides with the end of the quilt.
Love them all - and have the same questions as RiverMomm - where are you teaching? I have watched the tubes and tutorials, but really want to do this as part of a class - you know - in case I mess up, there will be someone there to stop me!
