I've made the recipe several times, it is a bit too sweet for my taste but everyone loves it. It calls for 2 cans of pie filling, a box of yellow cake mix sprinkled over filling, a half of stick of melted butter poured on top and baked 350 for about 45 minutes. Wanted to make it as all the family will be here tomorrow but only have one can of pie filling. I'm thinking it should be OK, more cake and less fruit filling would be more to my liking.

Re: Can you make a Dump Cake with one can of pie filing?
The one I make uses one can of cherry pie filling and a 20 oz can of crushed pineapple (juice and all), a dry yellow cake mix and melted butter. This is too sweet for me but everyone likes it with vanilla ice cream.
I make this when I need to provide multiple desserts because it's quick to make and tasty.

This one uses only one can

I forgot to say that when I worked at the hotel we used tubs of cherry and other fillings and I would strain some of the 'goop' off, especially the cherry. Maybe one day (don't experiment now) try that out to make it less sweet.

Re: Can you make a Dump Cake with one can of pie filing?
We have used regular fruit (slightly cooked down before adding to pan) or canned fruit with juice drained off. Mom uses a can of drained pie cherries mixed with the pie filling.
I have even diced up an apple, cooked it down a bit and added it to another fruit to reduce the sweetness, and keep the volume right.Be who you are and say what you feel
