Re: Blackeyed peas ... who is having them for New Years?
2:21 pm - AZ time - our peas with ham bone and bite size pieces of ham are cooking in the crock pot for about 6 hours or so. They are smelling so good. 2 or more hours to go. YUM!

Re: Blackeyed peas ... who is having them for New Years?
Last year on New Years I posted on social media that I was going to live dangerously by having taco soup and cornbread instead of the traditional good luck menu of black eyed peas, collards and cornbread. Well, 2016 was a pretty rough year for me personally. My elderly mom fell and broke her arm, my only brother passed under difficult circumstances, and I dealt with more minor aggravating make you feel like crap illnesses than I have in the past 10 years! So I definitely will be having peas, collards, and cornbread today. Maybe tomorrow too just to be sure.....Not taking any chances this year.
Happy New Year everyone.

Re: Blackeyed peas ... who is having them for New Years?
Having married a true southerner we have to have hog jowls, collard greens and black eyed peas on New Years day. For the first 20 years I was absolutely miserable with the meal prepared the way he directed but have since found a few tricks to make the meal enjoyable for myself and my children. First of all, I buy canned "Old Glory" collard greens. I didn't like the fresh ones and I didn't like the added fat back and seasonings. I buy canned black eyed peas and on my plate, I mix those two together. Pretty tasty. The Hog Jowls took a little getting used to but I find that if I trim that pesky rind off and fry it real slow, it is like a nice thick bacon. I even like it as a bacon sandwich. DH loves this meal so once a year I indulge him. And, you know what...we have health, happiness and "wealth (if you consider we always have enough)"

We have made them in the past. I have a cold and don't feel like making anything. I usually soak the dry beans overnight. Then cook them with a ham hock from the Christmas ham and a few other seasonings.
Although I didn't cook, I did get the barn cleaned today. It was pretty gross and I hoped the fumes would burn the gunk out of my sinuses. I don't think it helped my head, but the goats are happy in their new bedding.

Just got the ham bone out of the freezer and a jar of black eye peas we grew in our garden this year. Will soak the beans tonight and put all in the crock pot tomorrow. Can't wait. Cornbread to go with it.

All I can remember is that I babysat every year. Nothing comes to mind before that.

No food New Years Eve traditions in our family but when I was a kid my brothers, sisters and I played Bingo. It was our grandfather's BDay and he would tell us stories about growing up in Brooklyn in the early 1900's. Wish I coud remember them now.

Does Mexican beans in the crockpot count?

Since I won't be awake at midnight I'd like to wish everyone a very happy New Year. Tomorrow we will have the southern standard of black eyed peas, collards, pork roast and cornbread.

Definitely having black eyed peas at our house, corn bread, fried potatoes and cabbage ( can't take greens). It is not my favorite but have to stick with tradition.

I usually have steaming home made bread with a slow-cooked pot of chili.

Very interesting thread about this tradition. We here at the Atkinson household have been having SEAFOOD for quite a number of years now, lobster, shrimp, scallops and steak. Mmmmm can hardly wait to people to get here, getting hungry.

Yes , black eye peas, but also have a pot pinto beans , we don't care a lot for black eye peas so we put a couple of tablespoons on top of corn and pinto beans. And of course a big serving fried potatoes. We are originally from Oklahoma and so keep this tradition in Kansas.

MM's mom used to make black eyed peas and collard greens every year. One was for health, the other for wealth. I'd go have my spoonful each year to make her happy, but I'm not a fan of either.
