    Red cabbage recipe?

I had a German friend that I worked with and she made the best dish just out of her fridge with red cabbage. I seem to have picked up too much (forgetting I already had some) for salads.

Do you have something you like?

My husband's mother is Danish and this is a traditional dish from Denmark. He makes it for Thanksgiving but it is so delicious it's for more than special occasions. It may sound weird but it's awesome!

    Rodcol

    1 red cabbage
    Brown sugar
    Balsamic vinegar
    1 apple
    Golden raisins

I can't give you measurements on the vinegar or sugar, it's to your taste. Simmer it till cabbage is soft. Hope you try it!

Love Dutch Red Cabbage! We too make it with apple and vinegar. On the side of Rare Roast Beef, crumbled boiled potatoes and au jus! Yummy!

      22 Ounces Red Cabbage
      2 Granny Smiths
      Sugar
      Cloves
      Apple Cider Vinegar
      1 Ounce Butter
      Salt & Pepper to taste

      Enjoy -

Also good cold the next day with some Louisiana Hot Sauce as a slaw.
Shred the cabbage, core the apples and finely slice the apples. Add all the ingredients and simmer slowly for about 45 minutes.
      Salt and pepper to taste.

        They both sound yummy! Thanks!

I remembered she put ham in it I think. I don't eat meat anymore so that's okay with me. But would meat be put into this, or just a side as you guys gave. I always like to bring a new dish each time I go somewhere. When I go to my stepdd's house her mil will bring fried pork pot stickers. Do you not know how to make something else?

Funny thing is, she doesn't eat fried foods. lol

Is the vinegar and butter enough to simmer all that for 45 mins? Is it a full bottle of vinegar?

The cabbage and apples sweat and give off liquid, I would start with a 1/4 cup of vinegar (it's to your own taste, that's why the recipe doesn't state how much to use). Keep it on low/simmer, watch it, if you need more liquid, add water.

My recipe from my favorite 'go-to' cookbook, is a traditional sweet and sour red cabbage. Serves 6, begin 2 hours ahead.

              1/4 cup bacon drippings
              1/4 cup finely chopped onions
1 medium head red cabbage, shredded (about 8 cups)
3 medium apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced
              2 cup water
              1/2 cup wine vinegar
              1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 tsp caraway seed (I don't always add this)
              1/2 tsp salt
              1/8 tsp pepper

In 5 Qt dutch oven, over medium high heat, cook onions till tender in hot bacon drippings.

Stir in remaining ingredients and heat to boiling. Reduce heat to low. Cover, simmering 1 1/2 hours until cabbage very tender, stirring occasionally. Yield 5 cups.
I really need to get off the exclamation point.
It may give people the idea that I'm bright and cheerful all the time....
