We did. Two surgeons and the doctor all thought this was the best route to take. I'm hoping they are right. It would not be good for him to have a third surgery in such a short period of time. They have all heard of this happening, although it is very rare.

Oh, Pat, it just keeps piling on, doesn't it? I hope they are setting you up with a home infusion nurse to manage the TPN (total parental nutrition, or IV feedings). Because of the necessary high glucose content in TPN, there is an infection risk in the port. Practice good hand hygiene (I know you are doing that already) and clean all the port connections with antiseptic when connecting or flushing the port.

We won't be accessing the port. They will put a line in and we will be using that. I'm sure we will learn more when we go in for that class.

I'm expecting my medical degree in the mail any day.

The infection risk is there for whatever line they put in. Scrub all those connections well.

And you have absolutely earned that medical degree!

Wow. Lots happening. Continuing to pray. I am glad that he is at least going to be able to be home. A friend of mine who had TPN was required to be at the nursing home for her treatment time. She said it became easier not to want food but the hardest medical part was the dry mouth from not drinking or eating.

Yep, they mean resting the gut completely. He may not even be able to chew gum. Ask about artificial saliva (which my pharmacist friend refers to as "pseudo-spit").

Oh Pat, I am at a loss for words. You both have been through so much thus far. I will continue with prayers because that is all I can do for you both.

As for that medical degree, you have so earned it.

I am so sorry that both of you are experiencing this horrible health issue. I know you will never forget all the bumps along the way, but I pray that you will overcome all the complications and will soon be "normal" again. Prayers and hugs for you both.

Wow, too much going on for the both of you...my heart aches and I sure wish there's was something I could do to ease your burden. As I can't I will continue to pray, sending huge hugs over the miles. I'm checking with AMA to see where your degree is....must of got lost in the mail.
