Samsung Washer.. anybody have theirs recalled?

    Samsung Washer.. anybody have theirs recalled?

    Warning: this is a long rant.
    So by now I'm sure everyone has heard the latest Samsung Note 7 phone was recalled because they were spontaneously catching fire. What hasn't made quite the biggest news story is that a large line of their washers are ALSO being recalled. For also blowing up ... this affects their top loaders only, not front loaders. I just happened to catch this on our local news. So I went to the Samsung website and plugged in my serial and model number. Ugh, yes mine was affected. My husband and I just bought this set 5 years ago ... we have no children in the house so it's just our laundry. In my mind, this set is relatively new. I had 2 options ... they would "fix" the machine or I could sell it back to them for ... get this ... $45.00... yes forty five dollars. The set cost us about $1300.00 five years ago and they think it's only worth $45. So I opt for the fix ... tech shows up ... he works for DISH satellite...Samsung has contracted with DISH techs and showed them how to do a little 10 minute adjustment to my washer and stick a new sticker on the machine that basically says I can only wash bedding on the delicate cycle or I run the risk of my washer catching fire or blowing up. Delicate is what I wash my bras on ... the machine hardly moves .. but that cycle is supposed to clean my bedding??? OMG, I'm so furious! I have something in my home that could potentially cause a fire and how can I morally even try to sell this on Craigslist?? Once I can actually put 2 words together that don't turn people's ears blue I guess I'm calling the local call for action news station or perhaps the state attorney general. I'm not sure now if I'm more upset about the $45 or the fact the tech doesn't even have washing machine repair experience ... Rant over, thanks for listening.

      Sorry to hear that is how they're opting to fix that. I heard about that on our news quite a while ago. Seems strange they're just contacting the buyers now.

        Samsung is having significant quality control issues on everything they make. Please do yourself a favor and don't buy from them. We bought a new french door refrigerator from them a year ago in June. In July, after the warranty was up, the ice maker stopped working. I called Sears (where we bought it) and even though it was just 13 months old, had to pay $500 to have it repaired. The technician told me that Samsung's were his most frequent call and most of them start having problems as soon as the warranty is up. He said the repair we needed was one of the most common. Apparently the ice maker box, which sits in the refrigerator compartment, leaks air into the unit causing the ice maker to freeze up. The repair is only guaranteed for 90 days! I just noticed this week it is starting to drip water again. I guess my 90 days are up.

          Oh my. Appliances are suppose to last and last and last. Remember those round topped refrigerators that lasted until you couldn't stand it any more? I had a washer that lasted 20 years. When I went to replace it the salesman asked what kind I wanted. I said, one that will last 20 years. He laughted. That machine lasted 14 years. So I get another...it lasted 366 days. One day longer than the warranty but American Express had this deal where they gave you an additional year on the warranty so they gave me my money back as it would cost more than a new one to fix the old one. I bought the cheapest, less gadgeted machine for half the money and its still ticking after 10 years. Go figure.

              Wow, you really got screwed!! I would be so mad too. Everybody boycott Samsung please and tell all your friends and neighbors. Their fix was just unacceptable. I would call Clark Howard and see if there's anyone else you can complain to. He is a major consumer advocate. If anyone knows what other recourse you would have, he would be a good place to start.

                grammaterry, I have a real pet peeve concerning appliances now a days. Actually for about the last 20 years. I recall when large appliances lasted 15 - 20 years, some for the life of the owner. The warranties covered fewer and fewer years and they started trying to sell you pricey insurance when you purchased a new appliance. Remember the many phone calls you got the month after your purchase with them selling insurance? My reply to them has remained the same for the last 20 years+ "Appliances should last at least 20 years, if your's doesn't, I'll never buy you brand again. I don't need insurance."

                Sherrie, offhand I can't remember the exact office but I believe it is you State's Attorney Generals Office. I think you can call them and file a complaint. Also check the internet and see if there are any ongoing class action suits against Samsung. There may be one you can join regarding this. A few years ago I had an annoying, persistent disagreement with a national bank I was using. This went on for about three months before I found out there was an ongoing class action suit against them. When I finally emailed them and said "Do I really have to join the class action suit to get this resolved?" they immediately resolved the situation in my favor (not accepting any blame mind you stating they were just trying to be customer friendly). All in all it was a real pain in the a#$.

                  I wouldn't touch a Samsung ANYTHING! They have had bad tech reviews for years.

                    I would be furious too. Neither solution is a fix. Hope you can get a better resolution.

                      OMG! I had heard about washing machines exploding. I truly believe that Samsung will be out of business in the not too distant future due to the phones and washing machines. However, to not even replace your washer (not that you would want a Samsung), is outrageous. People are getting their phones replaced.

                        Our neighbors house blew up (one wall left standing) because something happened in their laundry room. Investigators could not determine the cause, beyond one of the laundry appliances. now I wonder if they had a Samsung in there. There had to have been a gas line mixed up in there too, for the severity of the damage it caused.
                        I really dislike the new energy saving washers in general. Going for a cheap model THAT FILLS THE BASIN WITH WATER next time.

                          Lynda I would be furious too. Seems to me that the so-called fix they offer was really designed to protect the company from further legal action because now you can't use the machine for its full purpose. That's crazy. I saw a video on CNN a while back, and it was shocking. I don't have the slightest idea what your recourse is in Canada, but I hope there is something.

                            Thanks for listening and thanks for all the suggestions on how to proceed. I will start making phone calls and see where it goes.

                              I dont own the house we live in (our employer does, international schools this is common) and we have all samsung appliances with no issues.... thought I really do love my Bosch dishwasher...

                              look into Speed Queen for washing machines, they have to be ordered but they have a great record, after years of issues with whirlpool/sears and maytag my parents ordered a speed queen and they love it.

                              We need to update appliances in our townhome in ATL and we are dreading it....
