So I posted the other day about having issues with an excel spreadsheet. Caroline was so very helpful! THANK YOU!

Today I decided to try and figure out some of it on my own just by searching Google and within about five min I stumbled on exactly what I needed! It's a really good feeling when you can figure something out on your own and increase your skill set! Go ME!! LOL!

I love Excel for all the cool things it can do. But I use it only sporadically so between sessions, I forget what I had learned in past sessions, and have to relearn it! Frustrating! When I first started teaching, and on my very first laptop, I had a grade book program I designed on Excel. It was so useful. But after tweaking it a dozen times, and not useIng it for a while, I forgot how I had set it up to do all the cool stuff. Believe it or not, this was PRIOR TO THE INTERNET and definitely prior to Google. Things are so easy for us these days with any information we might need at our fingertips.

I gotta let everyone else know, you obviously put a lot of time, thought, and effort into creating the spreadsheets, and your skills and knowledge of Excel is top-notch. But if you need fresh eyes again to look it over, you know how to find me.

Google is great. I am working on a monster spreadsheet to calculate various taxes, and used it yesterday to learn how to do nested IF/And statements. The formula for that one cell is 3 lines long. I liked this site, because it wasn't just reading but has some videos to keep watching to get it in my head. I felt very successful when I went home last night. Sorry couldn't get this to be a link you click on but it works if you copy and paste. well just found out you can just click on the link below.

Awwww...thanks! I am glad I'm not a total ignoramus! LOL! It was fun learning these things too!

KarenC...I'm sure your skills FAR exceed mine! The only IF/And things I am familiar with was when I used to type technical documents using LATEX! I hear people actually still use that software! ACK! And thanks for that site link! I could learn a few things here too!

Believe it or not, this was PRIOR TO THE INTERNET and definitely prior to Google. Things are so easy for us these days with any information we might need at our fingertips.

I'm with Jean on this. 1972 I was learning how to write programs in both binary and DOS commands. Before menus and icons and definitely before the internet. I wonder how many remember floppy discs and typing the "C:\" path command to get to an installed program. Or even "A:\" to get to a program which was bigger than the 512K memory.

Now Google can get me into trouble because, after following a link that leads me to more links, I'll look at the clock and realize how much time I've spent searching for something. Time I'll never get back. Don't get me wrong ... the internet is great for getting information. But at other times it can be a terrible waste of time if, like me, you get easily distracted and fascinated by the wealth of information.

Judy, I remember those prompts, but ughh, I didn't like them. I remember when I took my computer science class, our first assignment was write down all the steps you would do if you had a flat and needed to change a tire. After numerous steps, my last step was "stand on side of road and wait for a good looking guy to stop and change it for me". Ha, in those days I probably would have done that, but not in today's world.

Oh Judy I don't think that is a waste of time at all! I LOVE that so MUCH information is at our fingertips! Anytime I want to learn about anything it's just all right there! I mean you have to be careful and read a lot to ensure you're getting accurate information (everyone's a "specialist" these days! ) but I think it's amazing! Time spent learning is never wasted IMO.

I remember floppy discs for sure! The really big ones...well in my case 5 inch...and DOS! HA! I remember buying my first home computer and the guy who sold it to me said, "It's a 420 meg! More memory than you will use in your lifetime!". HAHAHAHA! My home computer now has a 3 terabyte drive! And that old computer now fits in my cellphone with 64 meg! I also remember when the internet first became available at universities and how cool it was to "type" a message to a faculty member who was in Germany while I was in Canada AND get a response back the NEXT day! Now we have "video phones" just as Star Trek predicted!

Is anyone else watching the tv series "Halt and Catch Fire"? It's about the personal computer revolution starting in the 80's. The first 2 seasons are on Netflix and season 3 just started on AMC. Hubby and I are enjoying it and it goes along with the "google" topic lol
