No - its a type of AC unit - evaporative cooling
      noun
reduction in temperature resulting from the evaporation of a liquid, which removes latent heat from the surface from which evaporation takes place. This process is employed in industrial and domestic cooling systems, and is also the physical basis of sweating.evaporative cooler

      evaporative cooler (ie: Swamp Cooler)

Evaporative coolers have been used for years. They have been around much longer than AC units. They are only effective in dry climates. They can lower the temp by about 20 degrees at most. That is what we cool with in my house.

Love swamp coolers, but I'm more interested in a recipe for a mixed drink . . . any ideas? Bet someone in Louisiana could come up with one.

it's best not to try to put it out with gasoline.

I grew up with swamp coolers in the dry seat of SE Utah. They worked great. I am intrigued by a SwampCooler drink though.

Lol, Sandy and Lorie! I was going to say, it would have to be green, so lime would be good. But whatever else goes in there, hold the decorative coating on the surface, k?

Swamp Cooler (adapted from Martha Stewart's "Swamp Sips")
                      lime wedge for rimming glass
2 oz file' powder, green-tinted sugar crystals, or lime sugar for rimming glass
                      3 oz crushed ice
                      1 tsp lime juice
2 jiggers Naked Juice Green Machine
                      1 jigger vodka
                      1 jigger Mountain Dew
                      1 - 2 jiggers seltzer
                      lime wheel for garnish

                      1) Run the lime wedge along the rim of a 12 oz rocks glass.
                      2) Pour file' powder (or green sugar or lime sugar) into a saucer and run the rim of the glass around in the powder to coat. Place ice in glass.
                      3) Pour lime juice, Green Machine, vodka, and Mountain Dew. Top off glass with seltzer. Stir gently.
                      4) Garnish with lime wheel.
                      5) Stay cool!

We had swamp coolers in S. Calif where I grew up. We had straw mats in the sides with water dripping into it. Large fan. I remember we did not even have a safety cover over the large fan blades. We had extremely low humidity so the swamp coolers were great. We also had 3 digit temps in the summer and it would be instant headache to go from a place with a/c then go outside - but no problem going from a place cooled by swamp coolers.

For several years I had/used a swamp cooler since I live in the "Great American Desert". It worked well to cool the house and if it was struggling I would go to the store and get a big block of ice to put into the water. Magic or should I say science?
