Re: Your Reading List and Favorite Books Ever

I just finished The Help and Sarah's Key. Both excellent books. My current read is The Fire, which is a sequel to The Eight ( Both by Katherine Neville -- The Eight is one of my favorite all-time books). The Eight was a book as cool as The DaVinci Code but waaaaay before the DVC was written. Also in the queue is a PG Woodehouse book, and Widow of the South by Robert Hicks. WOTS takes place in in Franklin, TN (where I lived for ten years) during the civil war...

      Hello,

I am reading This Present Darkness by Frank E Peretti and it is fantastic. He also has a teen series out that i read when i was a kid. I'm also a big fan of success/leadership books as well as personality books and anything to help my relationships with people (including my hubby ) The list of those is way too long to put on here at this time of the night, but at some point maybe i'll pick out a handful to put up.

of course i also read a ton of board books and children's books because i have a 2 1/2 year old boy and i babysit a 1 1/2 year old girl. my sons current favorites (we read them every night that he doesn't fall asleep before i put him to bed) are goodnight moon and pajama time ... he also really enjoyed the soldiers night before christmas this year because my husband is in the army and currently deployed.

thats about it for now happy reading!

I love the Elm Creek Quilts Novels, by Jennifer Chiaverini. Reading them brought back so many memories of sitting with my grandma, while she quilted, which I thought were gone! I've read most of them, just need to read the newest, "The Quilter's Holiday" and can't wait for "The Aloha Quilt"! I've spent all my time READING about quilting, and I have yet to actually finish something!!!

I really like to read Nora Roberts when I'm not reading text books for school. Homework never done.

I have discovered two authors this winter that are so good. Elizabeth Berg and Mary Alice Andrews. They are both excellent and write about women.

I love to read. I have found that with an audio-book I can read and do a million & one other things. Most errands around here start with a half-hour drive to the freeway, so that is an hour of guilt-free reading/listening! I can sew and read & that is my favorite! I get most of the audio-books from the library.
I have recently read (in paper) the last of the Harry Potter series. I am totally addicted to J.D. Robb & her murder mystery books. I am currently mixing those up with several other authors. Anne McCaffrey's series about Pern & it's dragons, Fern Micheals & her Sisterhood series, Diane Mott Davidson, Sophie Kinsella, and some of the Elm Creek Quilts series. I have picked up some other random books as their title and summaries have intrigued me. Some of those have not made it past the first disc as they didn't hold my attention.
Some of my favorites are the kids books I remember and can't wait to read to my daughter now that she is getting older. Mrs. PiggleWiggle, The Boxcar Children, and several others. I have recently reread the C.S. Lewis series of the Loin, Witch, & the Wardrobe. Tad Williams' series with the Dragonbone Chair. I have more, but the exact titles escape me.

I read The Thirteenth Tale and really liked it -- it was recommended by a friend.
I started American Wife at my daughter's, but put it down for other books. It was OK as far as I read, but not great.
Just my $.02, and probably worth just that!

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

We are reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett for June -- I read it already and loved it.

Re: Your Reading List and Favorite Books Ever

good thread...hope to get some ideas of what to add to my "To read" shelf. I read a little bit of everything but primarily for enjoyment and to learn something new.

My favorite book in the past couple of years has been/is "Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society". The book is a wonderful, uplifting story and is told through a series of letters between characters. It centers around the Isle of Guernesy, which is the only land under the English flag that was occupied by the Germans during World War II...the story takes place several years after the war and is...well, you need to read it, if only to see how the author gets the story across though letters.

AS for children's books that I keep around and give away, they are ones written by Judith Viorst. I didn't like her adult novels, but love her children's books...and my boys did too. Tenth Good Thing About Barney helps children deal with the death of a pet. "Anthony who used to be rich last Sunday" is about a boy managing the money given him by a grandparent... and my boy's absolute favorite (they loved to holler out the repeated, key phrase) deals with the fact that "sometimes even mothers make mistakes". I like to re-read these just for my own enjoyment!

My daughter just got a new book from school called The Pout-Pout Fish. It is adorable!!! Definitely one of my favorite children's books. I can't wait to read the Chronicles of Narnia to the children, once they are all old enough to sit still long enough for a chapter book, and My all time favorite book to read to them at bedtime is, and will always be, Love You Forever. I've read it so many times i've got it memorized, and i still cry every time!!! There is also a book called Someday which is something you would read to a daughter only. My mom got it for me as a gift when I was fully grown, and it is very special!!

I read The Glass Castle as part of a required reading when I started my first year at college (Fall '07). Jeannette actually came to our campus and signed books so I have an autographed copy. It was a pretty good read - touching, beautiful and at times very painful.

My top favorite books are usually full of some oldie but goodies:

                        *Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
*Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
*Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

And recently I've been reading some great novels by Ted Dekker.

I'm a Narnia fan and have been since gradeschool. I did my Sr. Thesis on it.

I also love old classics such as Little women, etc.

My fave quilt books are the Elm Creek series.

I haven't read in a very long time. Unless its for my kids' school. I pre-read every book. Currently I'm reading "The Yearling" outloud to the kids.

LOL hillbilly! It brings back some special memories for me. I was a stay at home mom for awhile. When I read to my son, his favorite book was Go Dog Go. That was a must read on a daily basis. There was no skipping pages either. Thanks for the memory. Hes 17 now and I miss that, sniff ,sniff.

When I was younger, I loved the Nancy Drew mysteries and another series about a nurse named Cherry Aimes (I think). Does anyone remember those?

All time favs have to be Where the Red Fern Grows and All Creatures Great and Small.

I also remember spending time at my grandparents during the summer curled up under some of her wonderful quilts reading the Reader's Digest condensed books in sets of three. I would also hide a Tiger Beat magazine or two and drool over David Cassidy. LOL!

Judy, I have many of the Cherry Ames Nurse Series. I loved them! Also had some Vicki Barr, Flight Stewardess books. Those were wonderful as well. The author of all of them was Julie Tathum.
