    Altered books..do you make them?

Does anyone make altered books? And what do you use them for? I have seen/heard about them for a few years...would like to make one but don't see the reason to do so. Is it just a decorative item or is there more of a use for it? maybe a journal that can be used or something like that? if you have..got any instruction or places to go for good instruction? Thanks!

I still don't get it. why do you do the pages you do..what's the point? is it just decorated pages and then you write a daily quote or something? Add a picture for the event? I am a scrapbooker back in the day and I elaborately decorated a layout and added pictures and journaling....but it was a photo album with writing. What is an altered book? what is it used for? If I wasn't a crafter, I'd look at the pages shown in some places I've looked and think they were just a jumbled mess of trash glued to the page. I get how to make the book itself, but don't understand what is done on the pages and why and what for! No offense to anyone or any project making and I usually am better at getting a craft even if I don't want to do the craft, but an altered book...just can't seem to get it!

Altered books? Is that like cooking the books?

I do. I made one of my family history. Photos, Stories, Recipes that were handed down from my great grand parents to my children... Schools and even my dad's Honorable Discharge from the Army. Our history is told in that book. I have some great pictures on my other computer that I can't get to right now. I wish I could.

I tore out pages, glued pages together, inked pages, used inked and ripped papers, so it looks old already... then added pockets, and all manner of thing to it as part of the story. I used a letter my mom got from Pa during WWII for one page spread and used the envelop for the pocket on the other side. (Color copies) ... I used tiny velum envelopes to tuck in a recipe for my gramma's Peanut Butter fudge. I used metal frames and clear acrylic frames too. I tucked pictured behind pictures and in pockets with ribbons tied to them for pulling... it's all part of the story in the book. I covered the front and back of the book, but left the binding because the hardback I used was "A Purposed Life".

It's pretty awesome really. My kids or anyone can pick up that book and from front to back they can learn about our family, including names, birthdates, where they lived, schools attended, holidays, stories, relatives, honors, on both sides... my mom and dads...

I think it's a fun artistic expression. I had to do a collage poster in high school of what I wanted in my future. I still have it. It's kind of like that. You add some jewelry from grandma and it makes it that more special.

Here are a few pictures of my altered book... For me, the altered book is simply a different style of scrap book. You distress and alter the pages, cover them with scrap paper and it becomes the page you scrap your event or photos on. Just smaller... it lays nicely on the coffee table all the time, something I do not do with my 12 X 12 albums. I even added pics of quilts my great granny made by hand and a small thing she crocheted too. She collected the KC Star patterns too, and I used one for my page background. Pretty slick Aaay?
