Question about sewing machine needles - not quilting related.

My son has asked me if I would hem his shears that he has bought. He knows that I quilt but not much of a seamstress.

He said nothing fancy - just shorten them enough to hide behind his drapes.

So, my question is: what machine needle would be best to sew on shear material? I have a feeling the ones I use for quilting might be too big.

    Any suggestions would be helpful.

I've had to sew sheers before and used the smallest needle I could find in my sewing cabinet. Here are a couple of sites to let you know what you should be using. According to these, a #8 needle is best for sheers.

Thank You - I have bookmarked those sites!

So the second number we don't worry about here in the states, just the first number.

I'm going to need to buy some more needles - don't have any that small.

I didn't either and used what I had but could tell that it would have been better with a smaller needle. And yes, just the first number. But most needle packs show both as a rule.

Using a ballpoint needle might be smart as well - so nothing snags.

I'm guessing I probably should not use my cotton quilting thread.
