Happy Tuesday Ladies and a chilly actually cold Good Morning

Our snow is gone. Just the way I like it. Pretty to see coming down, no disruption of school scheduling and wisk ~ gone away quickly. We finally got about a good inch. Thankfully the ground had warmed up enough to discourage it from sticking around.

On a curious note, I am always thinking about folklore and things the old folks would say. My Daddy would always say that if you heard thunder in the winter you would have snow within a farmer's week (about 10 days) Well, just before
the official day of Spring we had a thunder storm. Sure enough, here comes the snow less than 10 days later. Things that make you go hmmm.
I spent the major part of yesterday trying to keep the fire going from small pieces of wood - it was COLD. Between my house and my Mom's I was tuckered out last night. Slept great and in fact, went back to bed after Luscious left for work this morning. It is colder this morning than yesterday.
Some strips got sewn together yesterday and I did a lot more cutting than sewing. My rag bag is overflowing, so I am sorting and cutting to make it more manageable. I need to work on the other sister's shirt quilt but I just cant seem to make myself sit for long. Yes, it is spring fever.

I want to feel my fingers in the dirt and get my garden going. I've started some seeds inside under lights and they are promising. With the price of tomatoes, I am praying for a bumper crop! Does anyone here besides myself plant by the signs? My sis and I also weed by the signs. We get an almanac calendar each year with the "whens". My Granny Ethel always did and she continually had a prolific garden.

Off to play with Gracie before I start my daily chores. She is holding her sit/stay a wee bit longer. YES!

We always wait until the mesquites are in bloom before we plant. It has been said the mesquites have never been caught by a frost. Also before the last day of the full moon. Really don't why, it was something Mom and Dad did and they had beautiful gardens.

Still cold here but the edges of the snow are working their way back from the house. In the twenties now. We can't put stuff (except maybe peas and the like) in the ground until Memorial Day weekend. That's usually my "get the garden in" work weekend. Have a great day everyone. Stay warm!

i have a black thumb... i love plants really... but i just don't have it in me to care for plants...
today i almost over slept.. i like to get up 30 min before DD so i can have coffee. and cigarettes.. and then be alert enough to get her going... but today i woke at the same time she is to be up, so not so bad. still kinda a bummer though...

blondie so glad your snow has not stayed.... march can sometimes be a hard one... for us in the north... we are so ready for the season change.. that sometimes it seems to take forever... we are on a warming trend and melting will happen...

not sure if i will get to sewing today.... want to toss sort and have a clean home... that spring thing i think.... scrub sweep mop... vacuum.... little at a time for me... for now... but i will get there.... plus with the move coming in about 6 1/2 weeks...don't want to take what i don't need nor use... will go nice.... and smooth.... at least this up coming move will go with warmer temps... my last move here was 16 below zero... and on ice..... this move will be in may no ice and way way warmer temperature..perhaps 60's....

okay...off to see more about my day...

I don't want to work today. It's cold cold cold! Okay maybe 24 isn't cold anymore but I think it's bitter. No kids to teach today, so I'll trudge through my paperwork. I dropped my baby off at preschool this morning and watched his work on an art project. That Reminds me: I have to create a wall quilt for my mom for mothers day. I'm having all six grandkids do a handprint with fabric paint on muslin and then going to sash/border/quilt/bind. Ack. I've got to get a move on. I finished 11 blocks last night for my quilt class. I'm determined to get my swap blocks done here soon, too. I've got the tshirt and Christmas stockings partly done and on hold. I just found out a girlfriend of mine who lives four hours away is having a baby shower in three weeks and I've got to do a baby quilt(I have some extra D9 blocks from another baby quilt I made that I can use, I think). And then I know of two more girlfriends pregnant. When you make a quilt for one, you have to make a quilt for all babies of all friends, because they all know each other.Hmm, I have the quilt top almost done for the valentines wall hanging that Jenny did in the tutorial. Do you think that could suffice as a baby quilt for a little girl? I could embroider baby's name in the corner before I sandwich it. Whatcha think?

I bought some bulbs at the grocery store yesterday, just need to defrost some dirt so I can plant them. Am getting itchy to get out in the dirt.

It's cold cold here too! I didn't sleep very good as I have a cold. I can't get warm one minute and then I can't get cool the next. My nose is stuffed and I ache all over. Oh well, this too shall pass!

Hmm, I have the quilt top almost done for the valentines wall hanging that Jenny did in the tutorial. Do you think that could suffice as a baby quilt for a little girl? I could embroider baby's name in the corner before I sandwich it. Whatcha think?

We are expecting a pineapple express through here for the next few days. Warm and wet. I am glad we got some yard work done this last weekend, even in the showers.
We are making the effort to plant by the moon phases this year. We planted the new fruit trees in the waining phase and they seem to be doing well. We may even get peaches this year. There are 7 or 8 pink flower buds mixed in with the leaf buds on the tree. We are hoping for better growing season here all the way around. Everybody had a crappy garden last year. The huckleberries loved it though,they were a bumper crop for sure. The soil is still too cold for planting veggie things out yet. I am going to start a few tomatoes and peas over the next few weeks. We have to grow the tomatoes on our front deck or they never get hot enough to ripen. I am hoping my husband will cut down the scraggly sitka willow down in the next few weeks. It is blocking a lot of sun from the veggie patch, not to mention that it is ugly. The one by the chicken shed HAS to come down. We lost the top out of it this winter. Thankfully it did not damage the coop or the fence, but if we don't take it down, it will when the rest of it falls over.
I got some house cleaning done yesterday. I couldn't ignore it. I wanted to so I could sew, but it bugged me too much!
I had more gumption at the sewing machine yesterday. I finished off side #3 of the blocks and pressed the seams. I have pinned side #4 to about 15 of 90+ blocks. I think they will about 8" when I am finished. I can certainly see the difference in my earlier quilting. (This one I started about 6 years ago.) I have become much more diligent about the seam allowances and it has really helped! I will be glad to have this one done and off the list. I'll make a dent in the rest of the pinning while the young one is at pre-school today.
I'm going to test out the new crock-pot my sister gave me for my birthday. I have a really big one, but sometimes it's just too big. My old 4 qt one up and died a few months ago. Then I can be making dinner and sewing at the same time! I love multi-tasking! I also love to dump in the ingredients and leave it until it's time to eat!
Lin: I think that your "Valentines" blankie would be just fine. You can also make a car seat blanket. I have a couple of small (about 24" square) blankets that I use in the car even now that she is 5. They are perfect for tucking over the baby to keep the chill off, and yet are not so bulky that they drag all over. In a pinch they can be used as a changing pad in the car. Even now I tuck them over her legs in the booster seat on chilly mornings or if she is eating lunch in the car. You can also roll them up to keep their little heads from flopping over while they sleep. I also make super-sized flannel receiving blankies and wrap the present in it. I make the blanket the same width as the fabric. Usually 44/45" square. It is plenty big enough to wrap the baby in, and use as a "Hooter-Hider" if mom is breast feeding. Again, the blanket stays useful longer because it's bigger. I still use Em's to cover her up if she is napping on the couch and needs a light cover.

Hello everyone! Just sitting here making up my weekly menu. It saves me time/energy/money. So have to hit the food store and then come home and get the clothes off the line.
Hope to sew some tonight if I'm not too tired by the time that comes around.
Sorry to hear you have a cold, Jan. They are certainly no fun.
Guess I'm off of here now so I can get this food store run done. May get some snow this weekend and would like to have the food handy ahead of time.

Evenin' Ladies
Had a fairly productive day sorting and pressing my strings and cutting other scraps up. Let me digress a bit. Last year we had some torrential rain and gallons of it got in the basement. We finally found out the whys and wherefores of that and fixed it. However, I had a few big boxes of scraps that I was saving. Most were too good to just throw out. I washed and dried them in lingerie bags and there they have sat - in too king size pillowcases, threads tying up strings, etc. for months. I bit the bullet yesterday afternoon and today - sorting and pressing. I have a long way to go however, my Pollyanna way of looking at this is - I found a lot of nice fabric pieces from 2 and 1/2 inch strips to fat quarter size that I had forgotten completely about. It is almost like Christmas morning for me. This afternoon I went to the Dollar Store and purchased a few more clear plastic shoe box holders for when I sort them out by color. Lots and lots of strips here. I am having a wonderful time in my head thinking of nine patch, postage stamp etc.

Watched a few DVD's in the past few days, thanks to my BIL who was gracious enough to pick out a few for sis and I. None of them was really worth recommending. I can't even remember the names of them now. We decided to pick our own movies from now on. Can't wait for The Borgias to start up on Showtime and our secret pleasure is watching Dexter and The Lost.

Jan, I sure hope you feel better and that this cold doesn't progress further than an inconvenience. Prayers and hugs for you.

Patti, I am certain that this is a bittersweet task for you. We are leaving the light on for you.

Trish, I am like you. If I make out my menu and plan my groceries around that I do much better. I am a perpetual list maker and keep a running one going as soon as I see I am getting low.

Cathy, you really have so much energy and spark! I hope the crockpot does you well. I have two and use them both. Actually one is a crock and the other is a slow cooker. They both get loads of use. Many days dinner is a sammie if I don't have it in the crock.

Lin, I think hearts for a baby quilt would be ideal.
