Kitchen Sink Drain Repair Will Be Very Expensive! :(

I know not everyone reads the daily thread, so let me explain that on Memorial Day as I was washing up the kettles after making a big batch of chicken soup, the kitchen sink drain clogged. Long story short, the plumber today roto rootered with the 50 ft. line & discovered mud on the tip end. Very bad news. It means there is a break in the line & drainage has been seeping out into the dirt under the finished basement cement. The plumber explained that many of those connections years ago (our house is 48 y.o.) were brass & corroded. The fix probably will require jack hammering into the concrete to access the line & replace it. Unfortunately, that drain in under the floor of the BR where DH sleeps. It probably will involve tearing up the carpeting, removing the wall of the closet, etc. We have a specialist coming tomorrow to look at the situation. We'll know more then. The plumber today said we might be looking at a $7,000 to $10,000. repair! I'm just sick at heart. DH finished off that BR during the first year we lived here. It was meant to a guest BR, but it ended up being his. I have a lot of quilts & other items stored in that closet. We're going to have to move soooo much stuff. Fortunately, when DH designed & built that closet, he left that drain pipe accessible in case there ever was a problem. And the ceiling is suspended removable tile.

Many of the plumbing businesses are very busy; some are booked days ahead. The first place our plumber referred us to was in Denver (he called for us -- people he knows & used to work with) said they are getting 30-35 calls a day & wouldn't be able to do it. The 2nd referral, also someone he knows, is coming by tomorrow afternoon to take a look. Hopefully, he'll have time in <a week.

The DW has been full & waiting to be run for the past 2 days. Won't happen now. So this afternoon I washed all those dishes by hand. Until our repair is complete, I will have to empty the dishpan in the bathroom -- doing dishes the old way. Inconvenient, but doable. Thankfully, all the other drains in the house are functioning.

Prayers would be appreciated for the right & least disruptive repair, & for DH. He has so many health problems & is such an anxious person anyway, so he's really upset by all this new situation. He may be displaced from his bed during the repair. I guess we'll take it one day at a time.

So sorry you are facing such a big repair, and hopefully will be on the less expensive side cost wise. You are right, take it one day @ a time.

I am so sorry to hear this. As an anxious person myself, I can emphasize with your husband’s distress. One day at a time is a workable thing, and I hope the repair is made a bit easier by his foresight in leaving access.

Oh no, so sorry this is happening. Our house is on a slab and it can cause problems that require major work.
Hope it turns out to be less trouble rather than more.

Oh Joy, I'm so sorry. I know this must be very distressing for your DH, and that makes it more stressful for you as well. I hope it's going to be an easier fix than originally thought.

Went through something similar at my dads couple of years ago. It was more of a clog up pipe, kitchen sink would just not clear with the roto route. Did camera and the stoppage was under the floor in the front bedroom that I was using. So to avoid tearing up the bedroom he had it rerouted from kitchen to go under garage/sidewalk and finally hook to main in front yard. Had to jack hammer up a path in concrete garage floor. And I think it was around 10K.
