Concerns about Zoom & video chats

An article came across my MSN home page last evening that caught my attention: "Thousands of Zoom Video Calls Left Exposed on Open Web." It's a Washington Post article by Drew Harwell. Folks with the know-how have accessed private videos not only of family chats, but also business chats and doctor/patient discussions. This is concerning. I hope Zoom gets their security issues taken care of quickly.

So many people are relying on it right now. I hope so too.

An article read said it was the host that has to set something no files, this help protect all in conversation, if not done computer files can be accessed.

Was something about strangers joining in conversations, they used a b word to describe it, (that is best not written am sure they could of used a different word)

Was also mentioned not to save / record, that allows them to view.
In another article regarding our pm use of the tech, they mention that other places can save content.

It is quite scary, makes you think about what you are showing in back ground, a quilt makes a great back drop.

Perhaps if going to use these video communication programmes, remove / save to somewhere off the computer your sensitive info from computer first.

Anyone know how to use skype?
      Is it any safer?
      stay safe folks

One of the advantages of using Zoom is that multiple people can join in the same meeting. I'm not sure if Skype can do that. Perhaps someone more techy than me can answer that. FaceTime is between only two parties, and it requires both to use Apple devices.

I have Skype on my HP laptop. I've never used it since I took the class. I believe that it's just between 2 users. Of course, multiple people could be in the same room & share the camera, but it's different from Zoom, where each person in the mtg. has their pic displayed. A person can join the mtg. by cell phone if they don't have a camera. One just hears their audio, no pic.

I know I'm not comfortable after having read up on zoom. I guess I'm an old fuddy duddy but these past few weeks have felt like "1984" coming to life with covid 19 news all the time and in my face. I listened to Michele Bachman on public radio today and her conspiracy theories were pretty convincing. Whoa, its a scarry time

We use Zoom for all of our school class/staff meetings. They still consider it the best platform for multiple attendees.
We have been given instructions to make sure we have an account. That we set a password for the "meeting" we are hosting and that we "lock" the room once everyone we expect has entered the meeting.
Most of my meetings are hosted by someone else, so I'm not sure exactly how those pieces work.
I will say that between 10 & 2 M-F you will be competing with every school across the country for Internet and Zoom time.

My friend told me about this just this morning. Apparently, they did not do a proper type firewall (if that's what it is called) and hackers can gain entry into your meetings or classrooms. She knows of some who have had porn stuff take over!!
            pat.

I read about this last week, but this was my personal concern before this. DH has installed on one of a rarely used laptop we are supposed to give it a try today for grand-daughter's 8th birthday.

Although on a rarely used laptop, hackers are using your IP address, so they would have access to all our computers hooked up to Internet.

Enjoy life and do what makes you happy. Everything else will follow.

Every day I try to do one thing that challenges my comfort zone.

all this techy stuff takes some following but,
if your other computers / devices are switched off, doubt would be able to invade, to be completely sure remove battery.
do you have an aeroplane mode on your devices?
                this mode stops signals,
there is the mobile data in data usage where can switch off, am assuming wifi has a similar setting.
on the computer there is quick keys that let you turn wifi on and off normally need to press an fn key and a f number key on keyboard.
If have security programme installed that should help protect your ports, amazon do email activation code, of some security programmes.

happy birthday to your Grand daughter🎂
                hugs

I use messenger to have video chats with Maizyn. The other day it was her father, her and I who did a video chat.
