Yes, Carlie Wolf, the census data is used to determine where the population is and (to a much lesser extent) what their needs are. The flow of federal dollars to the states depends on the population. But most importantly to the politicians, the numbers are used to determine how many representatives are sent to Congress. Although the total number stays the same, states may gain or lose a representative depending on population shifts. And then the politicians draw up the boundaries for each district. The gerrymandering gets extreme as both sides try to draw up the districts in their favor, leading to some extremely interesting shaped districts.

I think I recall the main reason, at least originally, had to do with districting regarding either voting or perhaps it had to do with the number of representatives various voting districts had.

We promptly filled out our short form and today, less than 2 days later, we got a notice reminding us to fill it out!! What a waste of postage!

I guess it was the one 20 years ago. It was long and I didn't want to bother. They finally sent someone to the house. Fortunately it was a day my rottie was sitting on the upstairs porch with me. The dog went flying off the porch on the second story. You never saw anyone run so fast. She never came back....not sure why. No one ever came after me for not filling it out, maybe she did it for me. btw, the rottie was fine.

I haven't received anything, yet. I hope they send me the short form. Two or three years ago I was chosen to fill out the long, invasive form as part of the American Community Survey. We were encouraged to fill it out online. A few months or so later, Mom got one. I had to help my sister fill it out with Mom's information -- cost of electric, gas, etc.

We got ours yesterday and it was brief and easy to fill out. I have received longer ones before but this one took about ten minutes to complete.

The census takes place once every 10 years. A certain percentage of households get the "long form" with many more questions. Ours arrived this week but I haven't even opened the envelope yet. With all the news revolving around the corona virus, I haven't heard any buzz at all about the census.

I sure didn't get any long questionnaire with invasive questions. They just wanted full name, phone no., nationality, whether you own your home or rent, etc. I'm thinking it will interesting for DS#2's landlady where he rents her bsmt. Her gr. dau. & boyfriend & baby live with her. Imagine if you had a household with many foster kids, or a big family of your own. That would take a while to fill out. Every person has to be listed, their birth dates, etc. I think I would not answer all those invasive questions. It's none of their business.
