Welcome to wet and windy Wednesday!

It's windy and we are having thunderstorms, and it is Wet, Wet, Wet!!!
Who can sleep with all this racket going on? I can't even quilt cause the birds don't like it much if I wake them up. I just finished watching Craig Ferguson on tv. The man is a crazy man but I like his kind of crazy! LOL
Have a good morning. I'm going to go hand quilt. That won't wake anyone up. So later this morning? Keep it down, I'll be sleeping in. Love, Jan

Good morning Jan, I've considered sewing when I can't sleep but my sewing room is right next to my bedroom and the dearly beloved man of life needs his sleep. I usually resort to reading or sometimes knitting, I find hand work can be a little hard to see in the wee hours of the morning.

Today is lovely sunny spring weather for me and if I didn't feel so miserable from this nasty head/chest cold that I have, it would be just divine. I did sit outside for a while and chatted with my neighbour while she was gardening, the sun was lovely, but there was work to be done inside.

Good morning Lynn, It's probably afternoon where you are. I'm sorry you have a cold. Don't you just hate being sick? Colds are the worst. Sometimes they seem to hang on forever.
Well, it's still wet, and windy here. I haven't slept yet but hopefully my husband will answer the phones for a while this morning and I can catch a couple of minutes before he has to hit the road. He does that for me sometimes if he has office work to catch up on, and I haven't slept. Nights like last night make me hurt so. I can't sleep from the hurting. Of course the storm didn't help any lol. I finally gave up stitching and watched an old movie instead then switched to a book.
Hope everyone has a good day and you have a nice evening Lynn. Do you have kids?
We won a trip to Australia once. We were all set to go and the war in Kuwait happened.
They wouldn't let us leave the country. They didn't stop us but made it very clear they didn't want us in the air anywhere on that side of the world. Never did get to go. Hopefully someday we'll make it. I'd so love to see your country Lynn. And Ireland too.
Happy Wednesday everyone. Hugs and love, Jan

Re: Welcome to wet and windy Wednesday!

Aww Jan that is sad that you missed your holiday and I hope you can get a bit of sleep soon, I've actually forgotten what it is like to have a sound sleep. A bit like you, going to bed causes me pain so the best I can manage is a restless sort of sleep depending on how many painkillers I'm prepared to take and I hate taking any medications.

Yes it is evening here now and my lovely man has just brought me a cup of tea. Not only do I have two children, a daughter and a son but I also have three grandchildren, all of them precious joys. My daughter has just discovered raggy quilts and is so much happier that she won't have to do those persnickety pieced quilts that you have to match seams on, like her mother makes.

Hugs to you Jan, and everyone else, wishes for a nice day.
        Lynn

Thanks Lynn. I have 3 children and 6 grandchildren.
As for the holiday...I figure we weren't supposed to take it for some reason. Maybe next time.
Your hubby sounds like a sweetie like mine. He treats me like a queen. No complaints.
Have a great evening and I hope your pain is better and you get sleep too.
P.S. I bought my daughter a new sewing machine about 12 years ago and she still doesn't use it and doesn't want to know how. LOL

            Good morning everyone!!!!

Jan and Lynn, hope you ladies get some sleep and that your pain is not so severe.

I've made a discovery about myself. Love, love, love to make quilts that have all different kinds of blocks. Doing a $5 quilt (which is a lot more than $5.00), but each block is different. Some are a challenge, but definately learning different techniques.

Gotta get off and get ready for work.

            Have a blessed day!

Morning all. Jan hope you catch some extra winks and Lynn hope that cold goes away soon. It is cold and flu season here as well but knock in wood so far so good. I will be away for a few days...going to work in a small mountian town so I am packing my winter coat as we are expecting the first storm of the season. Will check in when I get back.
Question for my quilting sisters. I want to make a quilt for a wedding present. I don't know the girl real well but she has been very nice to me. Would a lap quilt be fine? Any ideas for pattern? Remember I am still a novice.

Re: Welcome to wet and windy Wednesday!

Morning from the midwest! Cool and damp here this am but no storm or earthquake (at least not yet). We do get them around here too, apparently we are on a fault, but nothing big.

Jan and Lynn - I hope you are getting some shut eye as it sounds like you deserve some restful hours.
                NM Lady - What's a $5.00 quilt?
Sally - I think any size quilt is a nice gift. How about a Disappearing Nine Patch? Pretty quick and easy to put together.

I tried to get the BF to help me photograph two quilts last night but he was grumpy after a few minutes of me messing with the camera so I hauled them into work to ship and will try to snap some pics before I pack them up. I did not do a darn bit of sewing last night but I did mess around on the computer and found some great ideas that I "saved" to make. SewMamaSew blog has some kind of holiday thing where they share gift ideas everyday. It had things to make, buy, cook or win. I found so many cute things, and nice blogs I plan to revisit, that I spent 2 hours messing around with it. That is long time on the puter for me!
Well, breaktime is over....hugs to all!

Re: Welcome to wet and windy Wednesday!

It is an other wild weather day here too. The wind and rain are back. Like Shauna said we might even see some snow by the weekend! Yikes!
Shauna, I have made a couple of wedding quilts using a pattern I found in a book by Leisure Arts called "Our Best Seasonal Quilts". It is a compilation of quilt patterns from Fons & Porter. The quilt, "Mary's Graduation Quilt", uses Puss in the Corner blocks made from many pieces of batik fabrics. I went with the couples wedding colors. In one case I let them play randomly in the other I went from the palest color I could find to the darkest moving from the center out. The center of the blocks are perfect for having the wedding guests sign, but it also looks good with them plain. A lot of the quilt is the neutral background color so if you choose the "scrappy" method it will go just about anywhere. You can adjust the size up or down depending on what size quilt you want to make. The one in the book is 70 x 95 which covers a twin sized college bed, and makes a good couch snuggle for two. There are no tricky angles to piece, and if you do it right, you end up with enough half-square triangles (HST) to make a lap quilt or baby blanket. If you can't find the book, let me know and I'll send you the directions.
I can't seem to get the image to load of the quilt top that I made of the HSTs left over from the blue quilt. So you can check it out at [url]http://toggpine.wordpress.com/2009/09/01/setting-triangles-corners-for-the-leftovers/[url]

I hope that you ladies that had trouble sleeping finally found some relief. Thankfully I have a house of sound sleepers, so I can sew into the night or early morning as the case may be. I try not to use the serger though as it is louder than the sewing machine. I also have a small pile of stuffed animals that need to be stuffed and hand sewn shut. If I need/want some hand work I can pull those out too. I'll get you some photos of the ponies and alligator I made for preschool birthday presents.
I'll catch you all later, as long as we don't loose power again!

                      NM Lady - What's a $5.00 quilt?

                      Patticakes

A $5.00 quilt is a BOM quilt. You pay $5.00 for your first block and each month you take that block back to show that you completed the block. If you have completed the block, then you receive the next block. If you did not complete the previous block, you pay $5.00 to get your next block. They give you about a 45 minute class to show you how to cut the block and how it should look once it is put together.

The borders, bindings, etc are all extra. They also suggest you purchase different templates or you can make your own from the instruction pages. I have purchased the templates which makes the price of my $5.00 quilt a lot more.

The kicker is they only give you almost the exact amount of material to make the block. So no messing up on the cutting.

I've enjoyed it and you really learn a lot.
