New to Forum. I have a question.

I watch many of the tutorials. I was wondering if there were ever printed directions to the You Tube videos. I watched the disappearing pinwheels, and while I caught the concept, (very clever) and time saving. The cutting and measuring I need to spend some more time on. So once the block is made into the large pinwheel, where do you measure from and where exactly do you cut? Thanks.

That particular block posed some problems for a lot of people because the block ended up 12-1/2". You cut it in thirds. That was difficult to do to get the measurements accurate. I attended a seminar last week where we made that block. Their instructions were to square up the block once you made the pinwheel to be a 12" square. By doing this, it was easy to cut the block into 4" sqares to do the churn dash or shoo fly pattern. That was good advice, but I ended up cutting mine wrong and I couldn't finish mine! Oh well!

Jean.... It really does make sends to ?trim the blocks to be 12in... So obvious......why didn't I thunk of that? Anyway, I might actually try the block now....

I really do hate math...of any kind....so I often round measurements off.... It makes life a while lot better.... And, as long as you are consistent, everything will be fine.... I simply can't deal with that silly 7/8 thing they want you to use when making HST's..... So, I round the number up, and trim the HST to the size I want....

I'm a great believer in Mary Ellen Hopkins' PPM....

            Welcome to the forum.
Check out the website and look for the Quilting Quickly magazines for some written tutes. The names of the patterns in those magazines were changed, so you just have to look through the mags. Jenny is starting her own magazine called Blocks that I think will have more you tube patterns, and since M* is putting this one out it might keep the same names as you tube for the patterns.

                Welcome to the forum, InsuranceLady!

Jean, I was thinking of doing this quilt but will be cutting the squares from yardage. Now that YOU said you had some trouble, it has made me nervous. I mean . . . you are the queen so if you cut it wrong, it's a no brainer to think I will cut it wrong.

So, what size should I cut my squares? (yeah, not enough coffee in the system yet this morning and math is not being my friend) If I make the original squares 12.5-then the finished square will be 12 because there will be two seams? No -wait . . . crap-now I am confused. Am I over or under thinking this. sigh. Hmmm, let's forget seams and just tell me what size for the original squares and hopefully I will figure it out.

Really, coffee needed before cutting fabric.

Yes there are written instructions to the tutorials. You can use the "search the forum" tool at the upper right of the screen. Just type in "written instructions for tutorials" and it will take you to the page.
Browse the forum, I'm sure you'll find a lot of help & inspiration.

If I am not mistaken, Jenny's new magazine - BLOCK - will have many of the tutorials written out with diagrams and pics and everything....

I had a woman breathing down my neck criticizing the way I was cutting, I attribute my error to being distracted. Just start with two 10" squares of fabric and trim them down, I have no clue how to end up with a 12" block, triangle math is not my long suit!
