I've sewn all my life but only made clothes until recently. Last year I started making dolls and now I've made my first quilt. I was never interested in traditional quilting but when I saw the Quilts of Gee's Bend exhibit about 10 years ago I fell in love with string quilts. I've been saving scraps & buying fat quarters ever since, saying, "Someday..."
When my daughter was born many years ago, a friend's mother sent us a quilt. Each square was cross-stitched with a different baby animal. When I expressed my amazement that she went to so much work for someone she'd never even met, my friend said, "Oh, it keeps her busy and it's cheaper than Prozac." I now know that she was wrong. Quilting may be better than Prozac, but the size of my stash shows it's definitely not cheaper!
