    Janome or Juki Sewing Machine?

I have a sewing machine preference question: It's my 70th birthday month and I'm picking out a NEW sewing machine from my family! 1) I'm looking for a mid/low-range (probably $600 - $900 range) computerized one to do quilting, clothing and decorating projects with but not embroidery. I've narrowed it down to Janome and Juki (but NOT the Juki TL2010Q) Any recommendations? or ones to avoid? 2) How about buying it online from a place like SewVacDirect - have you had good/bad experience with buying a sewing machine online?? Thanks so very much for your help ahead of time!

I'm partial to Babylocks, but I've never owned a Janome. I do have a couple Juki's, but they are used for my bag making.

I own Babylocks too. They can be expensive though. I got my newest one with 0% finance . Viking is a really nice company too. I love my Rose, but she needs some medical care because of old age. lol

I've had my Juki since 2008 and I'd never give her up. She sews smooth, fast, never has tension issues and is fairly quiet.
I was given two Janome machines and I use them for embroidery or if I have the Juki set up for a particular quilt. I don't like the Janome machines as well. They seem to sew clunky and slow. The bobbin is difficult and I struggle with tension problems. I don't like the way the front of the machine case is really curved so you don't have a good, flat straight surface to stabilize what you are sewing.
I am in North Carolina but purchased my Juki from Pocono Sew and Vac. It arrived quickly and they were great when I emailed with questions. I have also ordered extra bobbins and feet for all of my machines from them.

When I got my new Viking, I was told that the the warranty is void if you buy on line. I would check on this. They said you must buy from an authorized dealer for the warranty. I don't know if that is true.

I've had the Juki HZL DX5 for about 5 months. Absolutely love this machine. I waited for the fall sale at sewingmachinesplus to get an extra 10% off. Also got the extension table. It does everything I need with enough decorative stitches. Programmable foot pedal. Best buttonholer I've ever used and I've been sewing 50 years. Auto thread is excellent and thread cutter too. Foot raises slightly with needle down when you pause sewing so you can reposition. Pretty quiet unless the drop in bobbin is getting clogged with lint, so you know. It's the most recent model group, and the f300, 400. 600 are very similar and a little less.

I've had great experiences buying from sew vac direct ... if you don't have a local dealer. Their website states they are an authorized dealer for Janome ... they have a brick and mortar store as well as on line. If you buy on line, I recommend calling them directly ... usually a better deal can be had. If you have a local dealer that is usually the best as you can try out the machines to see what fits you best. I love my Janome machines ... briefly owned a Juki F 600 and we quickly broke up ... other people have completely different experiences. Good luck

I love the Juki Exceed line. There are 3, the H300, H400 and H600. They all have the same basic functions but as you go up in number it increases indesign stitches and accessories. I had the H300 and it was a work horse. I made a bag from quilted material using a pair of jeans turned inside out for the lining and it sewed through all that without even a pause.
The only experience I have with Janome is their sitdown Quilter and when I had problems I found their customer service to be unhelpful and rude.
                  Good luck in your search.

Re: Janome or Juki Sewing Machine?

I have used Janome machines for close to 30 years and never had a problem with any of them. My newest is the Janome Memory Craft 12000 and I love it. I bought it from www.sewingmachinesplus.com. The factory warranty was NOT void because I purchased it online. The only drawback to buying online is having to ship my machine off if it needs service. UPS charges $200 to ship it from Missouri to California (mostly because of the insurance).

I also have a Babylock and it's also a very good machine. I've never sewn on a Juki but I know a lot of our forum members enjoy them.

I have 3 Janome machines and love them all. My most recent is the 8900. I use it for piecing and fmq. It has a lot of decorative stitches as well. Other than my old Bernina, I've only used Janomes.

Re: Janome or Juki Sewing Machine?

I like my Juki 2010. Juki used to do the Babylock air threaded sergers (probably still does) so if you have ever used an Imagine or Evolve, you have sewn on a Juki. I'll keep my Babylock Imagine.

I've used the Janomes made for Bernina - sold as Bernette. Fairly good machines. I've also looked at the new Janomes. They look nice, but I've had the even feed technology since Pfaff brought it out years ago. I love it. Don't need an extra foot. But it is a really good thing to have in any way, shape or form.

Re: Janome or Juki Sewing Machine?

I have a Janome MC and would never consider sewing on anything else. Everyone has their own choices when it comes to machines. Sit down with each one and give it a spin(so to speak) if at all possible. If a store is not within driving distance, check LQS or a local quilting club. I purchased my machine on line from an authorized dealer. The warranty was not an issue. Service can be a tricky thing to arrange. I checked with two dealers within a reasonable driving distance and they both refused since I did not buy the machine from them. I then called Janome and was told they could not refuse to service a machine if they were an authorized dealer. In order to avoid a conflict with the two dealers I asked for a list of dealers and found one that was more than happy to service my machine. It is three hours from me but I feel better about taking my machine to them. They also operate a very nice quit shop I am told by others. What an excuse for a road trip. I hope you find your ideal machine.

Interesting to read all of the different experiences that people have had. When I retired, I purchased my dream machine - a Janome. Well, after fighting with this machine for a couple of years (rude response from quilt shop and janome), I purchased a Juki. Love this machine - no problems and is a very hard worker. Good luck finding a machine!
