I used my 10" tumbler template on a layer cake, and it worked out just fine even though the template was a tad bit longer. As long as I lined up the top of the template and did this consistently on the fabric, the pieces lined up perfect when sewed together. (the bottom of the template hangs off the fabric a little bit)
I used my hexi on jelly rolls and 2 1/2 in strips I cut from scraps, not charms, either.
I did use the tumbler on charms and found it fit pretty well on the ones I had. It's a good way to use up left-over charms and bigger scraps.
Just wondering though, I did buy the 10" hexi from the daily deal last week. It's shown using a folded layer cake to get two pieces. Haven't had time to try it so I don't known how it fits either.
I tried it last night and wasn't real excited. I centered the hexi on 4 charms and cut. Yes, the missing fabric is in the seam allowance but you lose the wonderful little cuts at the end of the long side. Without those cuts it was not as easy to line everything up when sewing and my strip did not have straight edges.
I will just put the charm pack leftovers back in their ziplock bag and get out the 2 1/2" bag!! Maybe will do a disappearing 9 patch with the charms.
The tutorial is shown using a jelly roll not a charm pack. Please understand I am not complaining about the product. I just wanted others to know that the template will not work on a charm pack like it works on a jelly roll. I have a LOT of charm pack leftovers and thought it would be quick and easy way to use them. I will try Lynn's idea and see what happens!
This made me curious, I have both the small hexy and the tumbler template and I had two charm packs from two different manufacturers so I did a check. The hexy template was slightly longer than both charm packs so I lined the long side up with the long side of the tumbler template and it is longer than that as well. BUT the tiny missing bit should not matter as it is in the seam allowance and is the bit that would be trimmed away anyway. Give it a try I think you will find that it will not matter to the finished block.
I just watched part of Jenny's tutorial and she is making the half hexi quilt with a jellyroll....not a charm. The 5" tumbler works terrific with the charm squares and makes a darling quick quilt. You could also do a D9P quilt....super easy and fun to make. Barb

I'm sitting here with a 5 inch Moda charm square and the hexi template and the charm square is about 1/16th inch shorter than the template along the long base. This has me wondering if all charms are created equal. On the tutorial it definitely fit, but I couldn't use the template with the charm squares from the French General Fa-La-la-la line. The small tumbler definitely fits very well. Barb
I just received the 10" and 5" hexagon templates and they are WONDERFUL! I am somewhat disappointed because it is advertised that you can use the 5" hexagon template with charm packs and it doesn't work. The template is actually about 5 1/8". Anyway! I will use it on jelly rolls but I had a BUNCH of leftover charm pack and wanted to use the hexagon template--back in stash they go!
