    EZ Star and Geese Ruler

    EZ Star and Geese Ruler

I first used this ruler in January and I'm just in love with it. It makes half-square triangles and flying geese a cinch. Such a great thing to have with jelly rolls too!

Some photos of the blocks I've done with the ruler:

This was one of the blocks in a mystery quilt class that I took. Still working on this quilt top.

Half-square triangles are so easy with this ruler!

Another mystery quilt class - one of my blocks for the top on a design wall with all the pieces together

I'm not a big ruler person but I know I will always use this one.

I love your blocks! I had to look up the ruler you were talking about. I've been thinking about getting a flying geese ruler, but don't know which one to get. There's this one by EZ and then there's the Quilt in a Day rulers. Have you tried both?

I haven't tried both - I did link the ruler I was talking about in the original post though. Here it is again:

I like that it tells you the different sizes of strips that you need to cut from depending on the size of block that you want to end up with. It makes it really easy.

Thanks! I love the line too. I'm working on some pinwheel blocks with an Origins charm pack now and I've got another jelly roll I will end up doing something else with one day.

I love the way Rickie Timms does flying geese.

Me as well Sandy, I actually learned to do these from the same lady he learned them from when she was in Australia some years back. I did a two day workshop with her, a very talented, funny and generous quilting teacher.

I had only been sewing about 8 months when I took the class and learned how to use the ruler. It makes it SO easy with the way it cuts and you have reference points to sew by so it is difficult to mess it up. As long as you have a true 1/4 seam everything lines up perfectly. I've only run into problems when my 1/4" seam gets wonked out on my machine.

What is the Rickie Timms method?

I checked around and you can't beat the Amazon price. Thanks for the head's up, Katherine! Your blocks are stunning.

Thanks! That's interesting! I wonder if the middle part would have to be top-stitched down at some point since it is sort of loose.

I don't stitch mine down but then I like dimensional blocks. They stay fairly flat once they have been stitched into something and that bottom edge is secured. You might need to be a little mindful while quilting that the machine foot didn't catch on it but I haven't had any problems.
