BROTHER PC420 OR SB4129??? WEIGH IN

Okay, I am pretty familiar with the 420. The 4129 is auto tension and that is the sole reason that I am looking at it. I don't think the 420 is. So, anyone have the 4129? Pros, cons of that one? Which would you choose, PC-420 or SB4129?

Do you sew garments, or just quilts? The 4138 does not have a free arm, which is very useful to have it you are making clothes.

Yes, auto tension is a nice feature, but manual tension is no big deal to do yourself.

Both these machines look nice! What is the price comparison?

Just quilts and curtains. The 420 is $349 and the 4138 is about $900. I have such a hard time with my tension on my cheap machine. It has to be adjusted constantly as you can see by the wonky stitches in my latest quilting attempt in my "First Quilts" album. I am hoping that the quality of the stitches will be better with a better machine.

I have the 420 and don't have to adjust the tension. That tension dial is if you want to set up your own stitches.

Ditto. According to my user's manual, the PC420 has auto upper thread tension adjustment unless you are using specialty threads or fabrics, then you may need to adjust manually. I've probably only messed with my tension dial once or twice over the past year.

Do you ever get wonky stitches?

I think....all things being considered, I'd go for the 420.... I don't think you would have tension problems, and it 's a lot less money. I have a mid level Janome...DC2007LE, and have never encountered any tension issues... The Brother 420 gets great reviews...

Yes, and I discovered it was a dust bunny hiding beneath the bobbin. A really big one. I love my 420.

I thought of something about the auto tension.

Auto tension is great, I definitely LOVE it, but you STILL have to adjust tension to suit your sewing that falls outside the auto's "norm". There is NO one setting that will work for all applications, so don't think you'll never have to adjust tension again.
