Winnie, you may want to go slow at first. Make your first strip set and make absolutely certain that it measures up to the pattern measurement. Mine did not for 2 reasons - 1, JR strips were narrower and even with scant 1/4" it was less than the pattern called for. Whatever width it turns out, cut square and be consistent for all your blocks.

This is crucial for the seams to match together, and believe me, there are a lot of matching seams. I made this for a GF, and believe me, I am not ready to do this pattern again any time soon.

The tutorial is good, but I bought the pattern and I'm glad that I did. It has information that is useful to put this together, as well as measurements.

    Good luck.

I couldn't get another JR., but we did buy a lot of yardage in the same Northcott fabrics. It was a lot of fabric, at least equivalent to 2 or more jelly rolls. Then yardage for the border.

I made it for my girlfriend - Queen size. I added more blocks, gradiating the colour to the border. It turned out square.

    Hi Winnie!

When I saw your question, I thought, "Someone else just asked that same thing!" But it turned out that it was YOU who'd asked. It's tough to get used to the navigation in the forum, so I presume you didn't see my answer to you. I'm cutting and pasting it here for you.

Winnie I don't know an easy way to turn the Three Dudes quilt into a queen size quilt. It's definitely a non-trivial problem with that particular quilt pattern. Here's my suggestion: Using graph paper, to keep things straight, draw the pattern out. Start by drawing just one block as a sample, then start drawing out the quilt, repeating that block over and over again. You can figure out the number of blocks from one Jelly Roll, so start adding that same number of blocks, working just on one side and either the bottom or the top.

If you can get to queen size before "using up" the extra blocks from the second Jelly Roll, then you can do the quilt.

As I said, this is not a trivial problem, but it is possible. Let us know what you learn!

I'd add to that the "base" of the Three Dudes pattern is five strips sewn together, so you might be able to start with a drawing of five strips (after you re-watch the Man Sewing tutorial to see what I mean).

    Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion, I was concerned with sub- pattern and flow of the quilt.

Use wider/more strips to make the blocks bigger, or just add more rows of blocks

    Three dudes pattern

I love the three dudes pattern, and want to make it for my son, but he has a queen sized bed. Do you have a way of making this pattern bigger?
    Thanks for your help,
    Winnie
