    Sarah's Fence Rail Tutorial

Hi Sarah, I want to take your "chicken" challange and make that Fence Rail quilt you did the tutorial on during jelly roll week. I'm a fairly new quilter, so have a couple questions....what size borders did you use for the inside, fence rail strip, and then outside border? Sure would be a help if you could give me some suggested ideas?

You and your Mom have helped me more than you'll ever know, so thanks...
    stay blessed,
    Gailanne

Hi Gailanne and welcome!! i am not Sarah either LOL ..... but i bet since it was jelly roll week she used jelly rolls strips which are 2.5" x wof (width of fabric) strips every time after you sew two or more strips together the long way measure how wide they are and cut the square the same length .... for a fence rail normally you will use 3 strips... hope this helps

Hi Bernice, Suzi, Barb and Monique, thanks everyone for the "Welcome"!

I understand about the jellyroll part Suzi, what I wanted to know is about the width of the borders? After you get your fence rails all sewed together, there's a thin border, then the border with the pieced jelly rolls, then a wider border...anyone know what the widths of these three borders would be, or should I just wing it?

Here's the link for the tutorial, so you can see what I'm talking about...

Thanks ahead of time for all your help!

                  Re: Sarah's Fence Rail Tutorial

ahhhhhh - well - the first thinner border looks like a 2" and then a pieced 2.5" squares stripe and then a 4 or 5" outer border.... go for it Gailanne and show us what you come up with - looking forward to seeing it

                    Re: Sarah's Fence Rail Tutorial

Gailanne, when you get to that part of your quilt, your EYE and the size of the bed are what should guide you as far as the size of your finished quilt. Only you can really determine that. However, I wouldn't add a border any wider than 6-8 inches . . . BUT, there are times you may want one wider. We have a saying around here:

                    THERE ARE NO QUILT POLICE!!!!!!

I am not Sarah either, but the borders on that quilt are 2.5 for the inner and 4 for the outer. BUT like Sandy says there are NO quilt police and you CAN do what ever you want!!! Be brave and go for it!!
