    Hi Susy
I have used flannel in place of batting from time to time. It isn't as heavy but it sews nicely and if you hand quilt, it doesn't eat your fingers up pushing and pulling. (I am still not a good thimble user)

Susy, some of the ladies in the guild here use micro fleece or minky. I use (for table runners and wall hangings only) the stuff that is sold here to go under your table cloth on the dinding table. I am not sure of the name but I buy it the fabric stores here on a big roll. It is just a little thicker than cotton batting and machine quilts just fine. If you have a store called Neuvo Mundo that is where I buy mine. Good luck.
