I'm sure I posted about this last year after I had problems with my laptop. But several others have mentioned having problems with Malware, etc. I took my laptop to "Computer Specialists", guys who specialize in ferreting out Trojans, malware, etc. & fixing computers. IMO they were better than Geek Squad. They installed free programs on my laptop, so anyone can download them to their computers to have better security. These are:

- CCleaner - Supposed to be run weekly, but I run mine daily -- removes cookies.

- Defraggler - Run monthly

- Disk Checkup - Run weekly

- Malwarebytes - Run weekly

- Super Anti Spyware Free Edition - Run weekly

- Ever since I first bought my laptop (9 yrs. ago), my weekly virus scan program has been Microsoft Security Essentials, which is a free download. I run it manually at my convenience, rather than having it run automatically at a designated time. I don't like to leave my computer on when I'm not using it.

Of course, they always tell you, back up your data on external hard drives, flash drives, etc.

Just curious, has anyone with free anti malware or free spyware ever detected or removed anything harmful from your computer? I am very skeptical about these. I actually got a computer virus once, which was not detected. When I called the company, I think it was Symantec, they said my program wasn't "strong enough" and tried to upsell me a $300 program to delete the virus. I took my computer to a local shop and they removed the virus for about $45. I had that computer for about 15 years until it died, and was the only time I had a virus or anything wonky.

Just my two cents worth. I have Malwarebytes Professional, but had the free version for quite awhile. I have all the others also, except for Anti Spyware. The Malwarebytes should be set to catch anything bothersome all the time on the web, but the special Scan you can set up and run by its self. I run everything EVERY DAY, the Defraggler you can run a quick defrag every day and if you want run the full version once a week. I also use DuckDuckGo as a search engine, it does not track anything and does not give away your IP address or anything. Since I have made that change I have had NO PROBLEMS whatsoever. Cookies are so invasive and I also have Adblocker, it does not allow any adds or advertisements at all. The best thing you can do is keep your searches to places you know and trust, and clean everything out every day. Any banking activity, run CCleaner immediately afterwards, it is safer that way.

I have both an iPad and a laptop. On the laptop I have Super Anti Spyware Free Edition , and yes, its found stuff. I run it everyday. Had a virus once. That was enough, so were super careful. Also have CCleaner. Also run everyday. Have Adblocker and an anti-tracker. We too have Microsoft Essentials. Its found stuff.....but a real long time ago. I always feel......its better safe, than sorry. Thanks for the reminder!
