On March 14, 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt established Pelican Island, Florida, as the first national wildlife refuge in the United States, starting with 5.5 acres set aside to protect the community of pelicans and snowy egrets being poached for their plumage.

Protecting the birds wasn't easy; within the first five years, two refuge game wardens were shot and killed by poachers. The public was appalled; steps were taken to safeguard the wildlife and the people who protect it.

Today, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service administers more than 560 national wildlife refuges in the U.S. and its territories, covering more than 150 million acres of land and water.
