Golden brown Bosc pears are named as a tribute to French naturalist Louis Augustin Guillaume Bosc (1759-1828).

Author of detailed natural histories of crustaceans, shelled mollusks and worms, Bosc was a horticulture professor and, briefly, head of the French post office, before taking a diplomatic post in the United States in the 1790s.

He spent much of his time in North America collecting samples of flora and fauna and writing a study of mushrooms of the southern United States. He did not, however, discover the Bosc pear cultivar.

My favorite pear.

PS: DH says that my cousins and I have Bosc shapes, thin on the top and round in the middle, we're the Bove (mother's family name) Bosc's). Take another look at that photo to see what he means.
