My 87 year old mom will be having surgery Monday morning. She's been in the hospital for the past 10 days - went in with abdominal pain. She has a very large hiatal hernia, so large that her stomach is actually in her chest cavity. They will be repairing that tomorrow. To make a long story short, she has had this problem for years (although not to this extent) and was told nothing could be done because of her age. Finally she found a surgeon who told her he's done this procedure on more than 400 patients, most of whom are 75-85 years old. He is very highly rated (I checked him out!) and confident that he can help her. After much thought, Mom decided she didn't want me to come out for the surgery but rather after she gets home. My two brothers and sisters-in-law are there - I live 1500 miles away. I also have to balance what Mom needs with my husband's ongoing health problems. He's on a liver transplant list, although he's not "sick enough" yet to be very high on the list, so we don't anticipate anything happening there for a while, but he does have an appointment at Cleveland Clinic in mid-March for several tests and a visit with his liver specialist. And, I work full time as well. Please pray for a successful outcome for Mom's surgery and peace of mind for her, and that we can work out the schedule so I can be with her when she comes home. She'll be in the hospital about 5 days following surgery, then in a rehab center for a couple of weeks before she comes home. Thank you all so much!

Will keep your mom, dh and YOU in my prayers. Sounds like the surgeon is an experienced physician and knows what to do. Prayers for him too. Be sure to take a few minutes to just relax.
