In "The Vampire" by Heinrich August Ossenfelder, published in 1748, a man tries to woo a young woman. When she rejects his advances, he vows to get revenge by creeping into her room at night and draining her blood until she's close to death. That ghastly German poem might be the first literary reference to vampires.

"The Vampyre," an 1819 story by John Polidori, was the first to be published in English, nearly 80 years before Bram Stoker's "Dracula."
