Fanny Blankers-Koen probably didn't mind that the press nicknamed her "The Flying Housewife" back in 1948. She was too busy "flying" past her competition at the Summer Olympics in London.

The 30-year-old mother of two then pregnant with her third child became the first female athlete to win four gold medals in a single Olympics. She did so in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, the 80-meter hurdles and the 4x100-meter relay.

Audrey "Mickey" Patterson, the first African-American woman to win an Olympic medal, took bronze in the 200-meter dash.
