Ahhhhh, the wedding ring.

A wedding ring or wedding band is a finger ring that indicates that its wearer is married. It is usually forged from metal, and traditionally is forged of gold or another precious metal.

The earliest examples of wedding rings are from Ancient Egypt. Western customs for wedding rings can be traced to ancient Rome and Greece, and were transmitted to the present through Christendom in Europe, which adapted the ancient customs.

It's common for royal grooms to forgo wearing a wedding ring. When William married Kate, he followed in the footsteps of his grandfather Prince Philip and his uncles, princes Andrew and Edward, who all chose not to wear one.

Queen Elizabeth II: Prince Philip had Queen Elizabethís three-karat diamond ring made with diamonds from one of his motherís (Princess Alice of Battenberg, later Princess Andrew of Greece and Denmark) tiaras.

Diana, Princess of Wales: The ring that now resides on Kate Middletonís finger was first on Princess Dianaís. Prince Charles actually didnít present Diana with the ring when he proposed, but instead let her choose from several rings. The 12-carat sapphire ring she picked is now arguably one of the most well known in the world.

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge: You may recognize the ring on Kate Middletonís finger as the same one Prince Williamís mother Diana was given by his father, Prince Charles. After proposing in 2010, William said part of the reason he used his mother's ring is because he didnít want her to ďmiss out onĒ the day.

Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco: Prince Rainier III of Monaco originally proposed to American actress Grace Kelly with a ruby and diamond eternity ring by Cartier. Wanting to give his bride-to-be something bigger, Prince Rainier later bought Kelly another Cartier engagement ring ó a 12-carat emerald cut diamond with two baguettes on either side ó that would become iconic (shown here).

Meghan Markell: Prince Harry designed Meghan's ring. The trilogy ring features a large central diamond, flanked on either side by two smaller jewels set on a gold band. The stones were specially selected by the Prince; the central dimaond is from Botswana, where the couple hav holidayed together, and the other two diamonds are from his late mother Princess Diana's personal collection. The band is made of gold and the ring was made by Cleave and Company,

It's unclear if Prince Harry will wear a wedding ring, because in Britain, itís not customary for male members of the aristocracy and the upper class to wear a wedding ring. But....... it's being reported that he will wear a ring made from Clogau Welsh gold.

Thanks for the info. In Holland, where DS#1 married a Dutch gal while he was in the Air Force over there, wedding rings are worn on the right hand. When they returned stateside, they switched their rings to the left hand.

We were married in a Russian Orthodox church here in the US and our rings were put on the right hand during the ceremony. We switched ours to the left hand too.

Yes this is all so fun to read about. Would love to see a photo of the eternity ring that Princess Grace initially wore...I am sure it was really shabby and needed to be replaced lol. Her large diamond is gorgeous though. Oh, to be rich and famous.

Well, even if I move to Europe, my ring will have to stay on my left hand. After 39 years, and 39 pounds, that thing is never coming off!
