The first cat to play the role of Morris in commercials for 9 Lives cat food was an orange shelter rescue named Lucky. In 1968, Lucky was 20 minutes away from being executed.

A tough guy tomcat, Lucky lived to a ripe old age. When he died in 1978, another orange shelter cat stepped into the role of Morris, the finicky feline.

Today's Morris, also a shelter cat, is the third, and just as finicky (on camera at least) as his predecessors.

Morris has appeared in other media over the years. He starred in the movie Shamus with Burt Reynolds and Dyan Cannon in 1973. He also appears as a "spokescat" promoting responsible pet ownership, pet health and pet adoptions through animal shelters.

To this end, he has "authored" three books: The Morris Approach, The Morris Method, and The Morris Prescription.

To add to Morris' history, he became the mascot and permanent resident of the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Akansas during his retirement years.
