The world's largest cast-iron statue fittingly depicts Vulcan, Roman god of the forge and patron deity of ironworkers.

The 101,200-pound, 56-foot statue stands atop a 124-foot-tall pedestal in Birmingham, Alabama. Cast by the Birmingham Steel and Iron Company, Vulcan was exhibited at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair to highlight Birmingham's industrial prowess.

When the fair ended, Vulcan returned to Birmingham, spending decades in disarray before finding a permanent home in a park on Red Mountain.

When I was a kid we lived in the valley right below Vulcan. My dad used to tease us about Vulcan not wearing any underwear.
There are stairs inside to climb to the top, haven't done that in many, many years.
