Good Morning, all. I was wondering if you could say a prayer for my 10 year old daughter. We took her to the doctor yesterday for her cough only to find out she should be treated for scoliosis. They said it's fixable and she has an appointment on Feb 9th with the orthopedic surgeon. I didn't even notice as when she is standing up, her posture looked fine to me but when she bent over, it was obvious. I just pray that she won't need surgery. I feel terrible that I didn't notice it and what we could have done to prevent it. Feb 9th will take forever to get here! After DD cried a bit she said, "Well, Mom it was a good day, they found I have a problem and will fix it." That about broke my heart.

Ok, thanks for listening.

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter's scoliosis. In our elementary school, ever since I can remember, (I'm a retired teacher) a nurse will so a free scoliosis screening on all of the 5th and 6th grade students yearly. I just saw the notice in the paper that this year's will be conducted soon. Parents have the choice to not have their child screened.

Don't take on the guilt (easier said than done). Your daughter has a good head on her shoulders. She'll go through all of those stages, of why me, anger and such as time passes. She's starting a new journey and the hardest thing to do, is having to let her make her way through what she's going through.

Lifting prayers for her and your family.

Will pray for your daughter and for you. My son was diagnosed with this while he was in elementary school. When we took him to the specialist and he was evaluated, they determined that even though his was obvious too, it was not severe enough that it required treatment. He never had any problems related to it at all. I have a friend whose daughter had a very severe case and required surgery. After the surgery, the daughter was 5 inches taller and thrilled to be taller than her mom! She had to wear a brace for a while but is now a senior in high school and you'd never know she had any problems. I say all this because there are all kinds of different situations regarding this problem - don't worry too much (I know - easier said than done!) until you know what you're up against. And it sounds like your daughter has the perfect attitude to help her through this. Sending prayers for both of you, and a hug for you, Tracie.

Praying for your daughter. Feel good that you caught it in time!
They didn't catch my son's until he was much older and they determined he
was not a good subject for surgery. Thankfully he is a grown man with no back pain,
but I still feel guilty about not seeing it.

We do the same thing at our school for the 5th graders fixing to go to 6th grade. I also do vision screens on all 3rd graders. You would be shocked at the number of kids that have problems with their vision and never realized it. Don't feel bad that you had no idea. Catching it quick is a blessing in itself.I am a firm believer in the screens given at school. It is a very good thing. Some parents are embarrassed and are ashamed but I just tell them catching stuff sooner rather than later gives the problem time to be corrected as apposed to not knowing and causing permanent damage down the road. Thank god for childhood screenings. Your daughter will be grateful in the long run. You done good mom!!

Thanks for saying that! They must not have started giving the screenings this year yet. She's in 5th Grade and i don't recall them giving in 4th Grade. I know when I was a kid we had the screenings too.

Thank you. I'm happy to hear he doesn't have any pain. It's easy to miss apparently especially when you see them everyday and by 10 years of age, they shower and dress themselves so it's not like you are seeing them undressed. I probably wouldn't have noticed until this summer when she would be in a swimsuit.

Tracie,
How good that they do screenings in school. My son's scoliosis was spotted by our doctor when he was 9. He was referred to specialist at children's hospital. Since he was still, they monitored every year. We were told it was not likely to cause issues and. I surgery needed. He is now 35, and no issues. They did say that it was hereditary, and looked at both of us. My mom has spine issues and 94. I have always had back issues, and diagnosed a few years ago with scoliosis. I do not require treatment, but when I hurt my back, from falls etc, I do not hesitate to get treatment until it feels better.
It is good to be assessed and followed.

Who could resist sending prayers for such a positive girl like Rylie? She has a handle on this Mom. She will be fine and so will you. No guilt need be felt here. I am 73 and found out 2 yrs ago that I have it too. Not much but I have had a little back trouble all my life. So if I didn't know about myself, how in the world could you have known?
