Just as I was getting ready to go up and sew today, my sister Paula called. It was a quarter past noon and she was on her way to urgent care. I told her I'd meet her there. She has not felt well for the past couple days, and the pain got the best of her while she was at work. It centers in her back near her kidney and also the front, just below her right boob. She has had sharp recurring stabbing pains of the front every once and again, but today it got unbearable. I told her I'd meet her down there and walked in the front door just as she was signing in.

Then the wait started. It was an hour to get called into triage....no fever, normal bp and pulse. We then settled back in the waiting room to wait. It was nearly an hour before they took her back and probably 1.5 hours before I saw her being wheeled back in a wheelchair after having xrays taken. She asked me to go back to the exam room with her. The doctor finally came back in about 1600 and told her all the labs and xrays came back normal. My sister is like me and rarely cries, but she started crying.

She was certain something was wrong with her gall bladder, but it was fine. She then told the doctor that the pain was a lot like pain she had when she had a large cyst on her liver a few years ago that ended up having to be drained. I had forgotten about that. Well, the doctor said because of that, they would do a cat scan and that there was no wait and someone would come get us shortly. After an hour, I went to check.......the doctor did not finish the form on the computer to have it done and the order had not been submitted!! We got that straightened around and she was taken up and we were back waiting in the exam room in about 20 minutes.

The scan showed several lesions on her liver, but apparently they have been there since birth. However, it also showed two large cysts on her liver, the largest about 2" in diameter and it is pressing against another organ and that is what is causing the pain. They sent her home w/good drugs for the pain and she has to get into a specialist and probably have it drained again.

I feel so bad for her. I could tell she is upset and she looks like death warmed over. I hate the feeling of helplessness when there is nothing I can do for her but sit there for the afternoon. We finally left at 1925 and she went home to lie down.

I now sit here not enjoying the heat storm which involved large amounts of lightning and lots of noisy thunder.....I hate thunder. I tried to get MM to call in sick and stay home to protect me, but he went to work. Sounds like it is pouring down rain now.

Nothing like sitting in the ER for hours in pain to ruin your day. I hope your sis gets relief and can feel better soon.

I'm glad she was persistent and got them to do more tests. I'm sorry you both had to sit through all that - but am glad she is home and I will put her in my prayers for feeling better and getting her cysts taken care of sooner rather than later.

Sorry to hear about the EXTRA long wait in the ER.....ugh, ER's nothing but waiting and waiting there....and then too, the Drs. seem so over worked that a lot of the time they really don't pay attention...especially ( in my opinion ) to a woman.
Thank goodness your sister remembered things ! Hopefully this can be taken care of and she will be feeling okay once more.
About T-storms......Hate them ! I never was afraid of storms until we purchased our first home, and a friend of ours had their home struck by lightening and caused a fire. The fire did minimal damage to the house, but boy did that scare me even more. So, I feel for you as far as T-storms. Even though our house is insured, I still get nutty when there's a thunderstorm or the threat of one. Of course, I think I would much rather go thru a T-storm than something like the floods Houston TX has had recently.....OF course anyway you slice it, storms of any kind are a big worry as far as I am concerned.

Will keep your sister in my prayers......

If it were at all possible, I would come stay with you. Lucky for your sister that you were there with her. I hope she is able to get it looked at rather quickly and that relief will come for her.

Oh, Pat - sending you cyber hugs and a Thunder Bunder shirt. Most importantly, though, I'm sending comforting thoughts for your sister.

We all must keep our medical history fresh in our minds. This is a very good reminder of that. Dr's are overworked and diagnostic tests are difficult it they don't know what to look for. My prayers are with both of you and I know things will be alright. My God bless an keep you.

I'm so sorry your sister had to go through this but isn't she lucky to have you close by to be with her. Nothing worse than going through that alone. I am glad they figured out what it is and will get it taken care of. Sending hugs to you both! xox

My goodness! What a scare for you both. I'm glad they've figured out the problem. Hopefully, she'll have her procedure very soon so she can start feeling better. You're a good sis to stay by her side for support. You say it's frustrating that there was nothing you could do for her. Not true at all. You did just what you needed to do and that was be by her side. Thank goodness for our loved ones.

Having a Chronic illness, I keep a list of medication and the illnesses as well as tests I have had. I also have a list of surgeries that I keep on hand in case I have to see a Dr. that I have never seen before. In the past this has really helped at times....but of course you occasionally run into a Dr. that is a know it all, and could care less...

MM and I belong to an HMO and have since 1980. We have gotten nothing but excellent care from them, to include the two major surgeries he had for a large tumor in his chest and spine several years ago. All our records are there with them and can be accessed by physician or nurse employed by the HMO. In the entire time we have belong, we have only had a change of doctors three times...the first one died after about ten years, the second one moved to another clinic after twenty years or so, and we have had the third one (who is very good looking!!!!) for about five years now.

My sister just changed from the coverage she had to the same HMO. That said, all her old records are under Multicare and the HMO is Franciscan, so they can't access them in their entirety. I had forgotten about the liver condition until she brought it up yesterday, so I'm glad she remembered about it.

I have talked to her today and the pain is much worse. I just talked to her again a little while ago and she will be staying home again tomorrow. She called for an appointment today and was told the first one was in May!!! She told them she can't wait that long and called her doctor directly and will be seen this next Tuesday, if she doesn't end up in the ER before then.

So, please keep her in your thoughts. I'm really worried about her this time around. Thank you!
