Whats with "pre" black Friday sales

So, we start Christmas before Thanksgiving arrives. Hate it. I love holidays with my family, but I would like to enjoy just one at a time. The kids are talking about presents. Heck, I just want to be thankful for the moment. Then we are thankful only for a moment, and shopping the day after arrives. Everyone merchant is begging for your business. Who will get your first.

Now, to get you first, they are having sales before the sales. Really!!! I get it really, I do. But Really!!! Personally, I am not buying one Christmas gift until next week, maybe later. Now making them of course is different, out time plays into that.

What do you think of all the "pre" sale business?

Re: Whats with "pre" black Friday sales

I only get Thursday and Friday off this week, so I'm planning my outings as carefully as I can. Way behind as usual (too many projects that I thought I could get done - ), but DD #10 is home from college, so I will take her along and she can help keep me focused.

I must say, I'm not super upset about Pre-Black Friday sales - maybe there will be fewer folks in the store when I go out on Friday!

And I'm really glad so many stores are closing on Thanksgiving Day. My DD#6's boyfriend is a pizza shop manager; the corporate-owned stores are open every day all year, but his store is a franchise, and the owner is closing on Thursday, and hopefully on Christmas. So he will have dinner with his folks, and come over to our house for some dessert later. I think it goes a long way towards engendering good morale in the workplace. And happy employees are generally more productive!

My DIL must have shopped at the pre-Black Friday sales as she told me she only needs to get one more gift to be finished her Christmas shopping. The thought of trying to shop on any of the Big Sale days scares me.

After Thanksgiving is when I begin thinking of Christmas as I also like to enjoy one holiday at a time

We are getting very tired of this in the UK. We don't have Thanksgiving here and yet last year they pushed this 'Black Friday' thing big time. People were hurt in the shops and the greed was just horrible to watch. The commercialism is depressing. It is bad enough that Christmas has turned this way.............has been for a long time......but to have this as well is making me very cranky!

I don't like Black Friday Sales, nor pre or post Black Friday Sales. I don't like Boxer Day sales, or pre or post Boxer Day Sales. And I hate seeing Christmas trees put up before Thanksgiving or Christmas advertising or music before Thanksgiving. If that makes me a Grinch, so be it :-)

Re: Whats with "pre" black Friday sales

I hate the air of desperate commercialism around Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. I refuse to set foot in a store on Thanksgiving, the day after, the day after Christmas or any other heavily promoted sale day. "Things" do not make me happy. I feel sad for people who think they do - with the exception of toys for the kids at Christmas. I'd rather spend the time with people I care about and do activities I enjoy. I feel sadder for those who are forced to make their living in retail and are captive to this. Of course, I worked for many years in health care, and we all did our share of the holidays every year. But the motive behind staffing during holidays in health care is very different.

I have to wonder. The so called door busters are usually sold out within an hour of the store opening, both because there are so few per store and because people camp out ahead of time. Does anyone besides the handful of people getting last year's large flat screen TV actually save any money by spending their holidays consuming? I doubt it. Sorry if this sounds a little superior. I just think we go way, way overboard. Maybe it's partly growing up under very modest circumstances and learning early to be happy with less.

I used to venture out to sales when my kids were young. That was when the stores opened at 7am instead of 9. We were on a very tight budget, and they usually had good toys like Legos for a great price. It wasn't the madhouse that it has become.
Not anymore - there is nothing that I need so badly to fight those kind of crowds for! The past few years, I have shopped Kohls online with a very strict budget. They always have things like pajamas and accessories for a really good price - things I would buy for my daughters anyway (pajamas are a yearly tradition ). I stick to the budget, get most of what I need for my girls, and I get a bit of spending money out of it (Kohls cash). Other than that, I don't do anything else. We keep Christmas pretty low key, and I don't buy/make for a lot of people besides hubby, kids, and my parents.

I use to do the pre sale when the kids were outgrowing their cloths so fast. It wouldn't be as busy and I got things before they were picked over. Now, I have no reason to do that.

I prefer having time with my family, and staying away from the hustle. Now I do like to go after Christmas and pick up winter apparel, and get stronger me good deals then.

I love Christmas... It brings peace to me. I Celebrate for "a Season"... Tis the Season... My house is half decorated, I have 5 trees up and garlands too... I have Christmas quilts on my bed. Both mantles are decorated and my table scape is done. I'm starting on the family room today. Lights are on the house... ready to plug in Thanksgiving night.

I think that we each do what works or speaks to us. Christmas was big when I was a kid. My mom blew it out. Even though she was a single mom... she pulled off. I loved it... the house, the foods, the candies, cookies and Christmas morning.

So.... I hang on to it. I lost my mom, my dad and two sisters and my cousin all in the winter. If not for my home being a Christmas haven of color and brightness... I would not be able to cope with it.

But... Black Friday is not my thing.. I don't want to fight crowds and stand in long lines to get one good deal at 5am. And now, this year is worse. They are having Black Friday all week long. I do not go out shopping until after Thanksgiving, and I don't plan to start. That is just crazy to me. I'll just sit in my Christmas house and watch Christmas movies. LOL. I watch one every day. LOL

Now... the DH he will be out there with our son... beating down the deals!

                        Black Friday-
People trampling each other in the stores for sales only one day after giving thanks for what they already have. What's wrong with this picture!?

I don't go near the stores around the holidays as I'm so disillusioned with how I see people behaving.

I agree with you. I started seeing Christmas things in the stores beside Halloween items! Now really - why can't we enjoy one holiday before they start cramming another one down our throats! I celebrated Halloween and am now getting ready for Thanksgiving. Then I will start to think about Christmas. The exception to that is getting homemade items to be given as gifts for Christmas. And naturally I don't mind, in fact I get so excited, seeing the Christmas fabric starting as early as possible, lol. Oh the visions I get in my head!!!!!!!!

I hate pre-sale, stay open 24 hours, Christmas decorations up at Halloween and also miss savoring the excitement of the coming holidays. Neither side of the family does much gift exchange anymore so I make gifts or give money to whoever is struggling. My husband works as a manager for a grocery store so in 30 years we have never had Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Memorial Day, Easter, 4th of July or Labor Day together. People protest and won't go shopping but think nothing of running into the grocery store to get something. So for 30 years, as a one woman protest, I have never gone into any store on those days. To quote the kids, "I think it sucks for anyone to have to work on a holiday".

I agree, if people tell me hey were open on Thanksgiving, I say , I'm So Sorry. I MEAN IT. I wish everyone would just think about the importance of everyone getting this day and Christmas off , one day before we don't have them anymore.

I hope you all enjoy the JOY of the season...Be Blessed
