After having lost both of our elderly dogs this past year, we both said no more dogs. Ginger died December 1st. For the first time in about 32 years this house was without a dog, or two. Well, we caved yesterday and came home with this little guy. He was an owner surrender (not exactly sure why people do that) and the people at the pound seemed surprised that we wanted him. It seems he failed one of their tests for behavior - bit someone when they messed with his paws. I laughed and said "He's a dachshund chihuahua mix, what did you expect?" Spike hated having his toenails cut. Well, he hasn't tried biting me yet and I even hit his nails with an emery board last night to take off some sharp spots where they were trimmed.

We haven't decided what to name him yet. The pound had his name listed as Whiskers, but he does not respond to that at all, so we'll have to pick a name before too long.

My childhood dog was a dachshund chihuahua mix. His name was Tippy Toes because he had little white paws. He also had a belly button. We loved him so much. I know it is a risk to love again, but I'm glad this cute little guy found a home that will love and understand him. Congrats on your new fur baby.

I'd probably call him Bob - 'cuz he looks like a Barker.

Actually the first name that came to mind was Syd! I have no idea why.

He's sure a cutie.

Awwww. What's not to love a face like that. He's so cute. I hope he settles in & will be a wonderful companion. My grand kids had to surrender their dog to the shelter. They were moving & could not keep him at the new place. They had got him from the same shelter previously. They also had a new baby, & their finances were tight. There are many reasons why folks can't keep their pets. I'm sure you'll love him & make him feel right at home. You could have a naming contest for suggestions. I kind of like Bandit.

Actually the people that surrender their dog to the shelters and pounds are way better than those that just kick them loose. I understand not being able to take your dog to every place you move. Honestly this little guy was probably better off being turned in. He had several wounds, where a bigger dog had chewed on him, couple places on his head that have healed and a few places on his legs that are still in the process of healing. I have a feeling that whoever he bit happened to grab one of his sore legs during their assessment test.

Other than the first two dogs we had, all of the others we've gotten have been throw-aways (some moron threw my first doxie out the window of his pick-up on I-20 and then got out and kicked her when she wouldn't leave the side of the truck), adopted from the humane society or the pound.

Haha, think we should name him boB?

It was funny, not a sound from this dog at all, until this morning, when Mike woke him up as he was going out the front door. He barked his fool head off. Not a sound when Mike came back in.

What a cute guy! Our lovely border collie mix was found trotting along the side of the road with another dog; the owner retrieved the other dog but not ours, and she ended up at a shelter. The shelter manager described her as a stinkin' nice dog, and that is very true.

Oh Kaaren. I am so sorry that you lost you fur baby at the holidays. Our oldest son is in the navy and was stationed in Japan and we went over to see him and their new little daughter. The standard Schnauzer who was a rescue, had adopted our oldest son as his own. But, hie was living with the youngest son and family. This dog stole a piece of everyone's heart that met him. But he died in our youngest son's arms on Christmas Eve. He had the job of calling and telling his brother that we had lost that wonderful part of our family. And our oldest sons b'day is the 28th of Dec.

Rescues give more love and devotion that any child animal, fish, you name it. I think he looks like a Buster...cause he lookes like a bruiser.....I'm glad you found a new fur child to live with you..

My Yuki was handed into the RSPCA along with another cat and two dogs. Her owners had been evicted and couldn't find another place which allowed animals. She's been with me for more than five years now. It took her several years to stop running to the front door growling like a dog when the door bell rang.

My only regret is that I didn't think to ask if the other cat had been taken.

Awwww....he is precious! Thank You for rescuing him.

I have a chihuahua and a dachshund-Jack Russell Terrorist mix. Beanie, my chihuahua is not so bad about the nail trimming. Honey, the JRT mix turns into a Tasmanian devil if you try to trim her nails. I literally have to have her sedated, so it only gets done once a year when she gets her teeth cleaned.

What a sweet looking dog! I'm so happy he's found a forever home with you. We are at a place where if and when our dog is gone we aren't going to get another one. We want to go places and can't do that with an animal to take care of. I've always had dogs so not sure how I will survive or how long I'll survive without another dog.

Hugs for your new furbaby!!

Congratulations on your newest family member! It always makes my heart sing when I hear that someone adopted a "used" pet! The pounds/shelters are filled with such wonderful designer mixes like your little guy! Why on earth someone would sped hundreds of dollars for a labradoodle, puggle, etc baffles me. Hello? It's a mixed breed and there are probably hundreds of them at the local shelter, up to date on vaccines, spayed/neutered etc.

He looks like a Buster to me!

I am in cyber-twitterpated with him, Karen. He will be sure to keep you on your toes when you are messing around with his. And yes, Grace the chi chi here in NC has to go to someone to get her nails clipped. What a vicious little girl she can be. LOL

Oh, what a darling!
In my earlier years I would get all of my pets from the SPCA.
For some reason they always make such amazing pets!
Sounds like your little guy really likes Mike.

I live in a rural area and there are a lot of discarded dogs here. Most, if they don't get killed by cars/trucks, end up in packs and turn wild. We have a big problem with wild dog packs that run thru the pastures and kill any livestock in their way just for sport.

My heart goes out to the homeless pets; but when they do find a loving home such as yours, I'm so over-joyed.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. I'm allergic to animal hair so we don't have pets, but I understand how pets become a member of your family. I admire people who rescue abandoned animals.

In our area, the trend is to name pets human names. I have two friends with dogs named Kurt and Gary and family member has a ****zu named Donna!! It just makes me giggle when I call them by name.

He's adorable. I just love the black and brown breeds.

Our last one was a rescue. He was half black lab and half border collie. They rescued him before the previous owner could shoot him. The animal rescue had him for a year because people did not want a black dog that shed. My DH and boys picked him out. When they brought him home, they were surprised that he chose me to be his person. He was about 7 years old and we had to put him down after a stroke when he was about 17. He loved to be with me whenever I was quilting. I had to be careful to not leave my machine on because sometimes he would lay or sit on top of the foot controller! We live in a split level. My sewing room/quilt studio is in the basement and my cutting table upstairs in my bedroom (someday they will be in the same room!) My furbaby would follow me up and down those stairs, even the day before he died and he was having trouble getting up and down the stairs he just had to stay next to me. When I broke my leg and was on bedrest for 16 weeks, he would escort me to and from the bathroom and stand guard at the door. I really miss him but DH and I agreed no more pets.

I vote for boB as a name!

He is adorable, I like the name Scamp, he looks like he can easily get into trouble.

My dear cat Mikkie was a rescue 13 years ago. He is definitely my furbaby, he is so cuddly when nights are long, stands on guard at our front window and inspects everyone that comes into our home. He is wonderful.

Wishing you many wonderful years with this adorable addition to your family.
