View Full Version : My granddaughter is at Boston Children's Hospital

June 20th, 2014, 10:40 PM
My sweet three year old DGD was injured on the playground this morning. She's been to see three different doctors today and is now waiting to see a spine specialist. Please pray for little Dakota.

I will add to my prayers. What is her condition at this time?

June 20th, 2014, 10:45 PM
I will add to my prayers. What is her condition at this time? They don't know what is wrong. She's in pain and has limited movement of her neck. She fell off a slide this morning and has been to her pediatrician, a local Revere MA hospital and now has been sent to Boston Children's, one of the best children's hospitals in the country. So far the docs don't know what's wrong but tell her mom they don't like what they see. What does that even mean?

Saying a prayer that little Dakota is OK, it's so scary when little kids get hurt. Hang in there Grandma.

All it means right now is they want to her see the specialist. It means they can't diagnose it themselves & want her to see an expert. I know from firsthand experience that this is terrifying, but at times like this the best thing to do is to get excellent medical care right away & your daughter is doing that for your granddaughter. Hang in there. Like AuntieMern. I've spent a lot of time in children's hospitals, & one thing I learned is that you never really know what to worry about. Get the best advice you can from the doctors, ask lots of questions when you do see the specialist, and try to give your granddaughter as much security & comfort as possible. Tomorrow they might say it's no big deal, or they might say she needs treatment, but right now they don't know & there's really little point in your considering all the scenarios. What comes, comes, and you will deal with it then.

You and your family are in my thoughts. I know that it is hard to see a loved one in the hospital and not knowing. I hope until someone tells you otherwise you will keep thinking, IT'S GOING TO BE OK. Don't borrow problems and what ifs, it only makes you more miserable and doesn't help your DGD.

She will probably have an MRI. Does she have tingling in her hands or numbness? I'm just curious why they would say they don't like what they see without a prognosis. I'm sure that they don't want to guess and are sending her on to the specialists. She will usually go to a neurologist and then on a neurosurgeon if deemed necessary. We have a tremendous Children's Hospital here in Salt Lake City and I've seen miracles there. I have a lot of confidence in Children's Hospitals. Sounds like she is in good hands in Boston. Boston is #1 in many areas! My heart goes out to you all. I'll keep Dakota in my prayers also. ;)

What a beautiful little girl! I'm so sorry your family is facing this crisis, and I'm glad to hear she is in such an outstanding hospital. Without a doubt the specialists are there to consult on her case and devise a treatment plan. But the waiting is so so hard. My thoughts and prayers are with her and your entire family Cyndi.

Cyndi, please know that I am also praying for complete healing for Dakota, and for that "peace that passes understanding" to surround you all. Thanks for keeping us posted!

Dakota is having an MRI this morning. DD Faith is completely exhausted. DH and I are heading down now to be with them. I hate driving in Boston but maybe it won't be so bad on a Saturday morning.

Dakota was in this hospital last year for 3 days when a dog punctured her hand. She was a good little patient then and I'm sure she'll be good this time, too. It's all the adults that are having such a hard time! I hate this. I'd take the pain to spare her any day.

She also has two older sisters ages 5 and 6 (Dakota is 3). Pray for them, too. They are little but are so worried about their "baby."

Good luck. At that age, MRI is usually under anesthesia, because it's hard to lie still for so long. This can be scary for parents, but really, anesthesia is very safe. Ask for 'parent induction', where the parent gets to stay with the kid till she falls asleep. If your daughter can take a shower & get some rest during the MRI, encourage her to do so. Some children's hospitals have nap rooms & Ronald McDonald rooms where they have facilities for parents to do that kind of thing.

Waiting for a diagnosis is one of the hardest parts, but they have to know what's up to know how to fix it. Hang in there.
