I was wondering if anyone else is suffering from severe dry eye disease? Mine started in Sept 2013 but was intermittent and responded to over the counter drops. Within a few weeks it was obvious I was allergic to the eye drops, even the ones marked preservative free. I've had tear duct plugs for weeks without any improvement. So now I can only use over the counter ointments and steroids ointment when it's bad. I know it is better on the days it's humid and worse when it's dry out. But it is so bad some days that I can't even drive.
Any suggestions are absolutely welcomed. My doctor is also running out of options for me!

My husband has that. When he sleeps, his eyeballs will stick to the inside of his lids if he does not use drops. He buys an expensive over the counter brand called Genteal and they work fine for him. The doctor (eye doctor) recommended them.

I am being treated for that. Using an Rx called Restaysis 2x a day, also keep your eyedrops in the ref rig. Feels wonderful.
Thera Tears is a good over the counter brand, they have drops and a jell. I use the jell at night.
Hope this helps

Yes, I do. I am actually seeing a Dry Eye Specialist tomorrow. I have had dry eye since 2007 with a barrage of other symptoms and finally getting diagnosed with Fibro in 2011. Recently my Dry Eye problem has jumped off the scale when it comes to bad. I have been on Restasis for 6 months and steroids and neither of them are working for me. I also use Systane Balance, genteel Gel or refresh Ointment at night. My current Optometrist and Dentist have both mentioned Srjogens disease. My primary care Physician ran another ANA test last but I have not got the results back yet.

I few other things that I have tried to know avail is warm compresses, running a humidifier.

If you all would not mind keeping me in your thoughts and prayers tomorrow it would greatly appreciated. My Eyes are so dry I am having difficulty working (I am a bookkeeper), sewing, watching TV and spending time on the PC.

Fannie,of course you'll be in our tonight's and prayers.Have the drs said anything about rheumatoid arthritis? I know that eye disease can be common with RA.
GOOD LUCK.

I have had by ANA tested a few times and it only comes back slightly elevated. I've been to 3 Rheumotologist and the last diagnosed as Fibro. He said it was not RA but all of this frustrating :(

I feel your pain! My prior tests for Sjogrens have been negative. But I have had fibromyalgia for the past 14 years, only the last two have been without pain since my rheumatologist started me on Cymbalta. What a difference!!! I have no more pain,or electricial zapping thru out my arms and legs. I still have the exaggerated pain response when I am injured but it only lasts seconds now instead of hours!!
Since I can't take any eye drops it have been using Genteal, systane and theratears ointment all day which leaves me unable to see clearly briefly after I put it in. But when I have that pain like a needle in my eye I am forced to close my eyes and sleep! It takes about 2 hrs to go away! (Really cuts in to my quilting time!) I worked as a nurse for 13 years with fibro but I haven't been able to work with the eye dryness so I retired late December 2013.
On the days it rains I'm better! But when it's warm and dry with low humidity I'm a mess! Humidifiers have not helped at all!
I wish someone would find a way to make this better!
Best of luck at your doctors appt. Mine is Thursday but I'm not getting my hopes up! :(

Irishrn,

The Specialist that I am going to see offers a procedure called Lipiflow Thermal Pulsation. I have lots of questions for him like If my eyes are dry due to something systemically will this procedure be a waste of my time and money. The procedure is not covered by my insurance and cost around $1500.

Please keep me posted. I've not heard of this but will do some research. Could it be that easy? I hope you have an informative visit!
And I will let you know what I find out. :icon_bigsmile:

I have them as well. Only limited relief for a short time after use. I feel like I've tried so many things so far and I am becoming very discouraged! I will keep looking and hopefully we will all get some relief!! Thanks
