View Full Version : Sally Sue has surgery today

My 9 month old schnauzer is having surgery today. Apparently she ate a foreign object and it is stuck in her stomach and has blocked her bowels. She has been in the hospital since yesterday morning. The vet called and said surgery at 11:15. She has a good chance of being ok. But she is so sick. DH took her as I had to work. I went to vets after work and she had declined so much in one day. I'm just sick with worry. I lost my Shugg last July. I don't think I can do this again.

She should do fine. Nellie, one of the dogs I used to house-sit with, a big, goofy golden retriever, had a bad habit of eating socks. She had to go through the surgery to remove one and although it slowed her down for a few days, she came through just fine. Luckily the next time she decided that socks tasted good she was able to pass it on her own. Nellie was a problem child ...

Oh I'm so sorry for your fur baby. Surgery is harder on you than the puppy. She will get over this faster than you. Sending hugs your way.

oooo, I hope all is well. I'm always worried my 6 mo old schnauzer is going to do the same thing. He can't resist tasting "foreign" objects.

Good thoughts and wishes for Sally Sue!

Be interesting to find out what it is she ate. My sisters Dalmatian loved rocks! Once he ate one that was about 5" long and over an inch across. He had to have that one removed.

Well Sally survived the surgery. From her stomach and part of her intestines he removed, small bits of a dog toy, alot of long coarse type hair, ( which I think is the stiffing from a pillow she destroyed awhile back) and pieces of wood. He said he had to go into emergency mode as her temp went very low as well as her heart rate. This was corrected during surgery with medication. I spoke to the vet at lunch time and he said she wasn't coming along as well as he had hoped but he thought is was from the pain she was in. Spoke to him again at 6, and he said she was holding her own, but she wasn't out of the woods yet. I asked when we would be , he responded midday tomorrow. He was very concerned how much this surgery took out of her. Keep praying please.

Oscar liked to eat things he shouldn't...had to put a muzzle on him for a while till we broke him of that habit. Did he suggest anything like that?

Here's hoping for a full recovery!

Liz, I am so, so sorry for the loss of your precious dog. I have been there too many times myself over the years (the only downside to being a pet lover - no matter how long they live, when they go it is always too soon), so I empathize with your heartache. I will keep you in my prayers for healing and strength. Hugs!!!
